I think Dale marches to his own drummer. I think he remains the best BB coach in LSU history, but that he is a better man than coach. He touched a great many lives in a positive way. In the end, what more can you ask for in life?

Unfortunately, calling him the best BB coach in our history is not really saying that much, especially in comparision to other SEC "best " coaches. It's more a matter of the bar being set pretty low. Consider that he had the SEC player of the yr 4 times, twice with Shaq & twice with Chris Jackson, toss in more than few very good role players with each, and he never won the conference. And this was when UK was not what it was or is now; Georgia won it, Vandy won it, but he never did with these great, all time players. As much as I detest Bob Knight, he hit the nail on its head with his comment bout looking down at the other bench, seeing Dale, and knowing he had the game won. And the next time you run across Smoke at Sammy's, ask him what he thinks bout him as a person. Or the 4 reporters from the Advocate who he had run out of town for negative reporting on his program.

You must not have been around back then, he won the conference 4 times, and 4 second place finishes. He also took us to two final fours.

Say what???

The only thing Dale didn't achieve for LSU was winning a NC.

Misstated..he did not win the conference with 2 of the greatest playes in our history at a time when the conference was not that strong. Yes, he did win with some great teams, but look at the totality of his career, especially at the end, and while he may be our best coach, I still say that is not saying that much.

You do realize Knight made that comment about six months after the game in retaliation to a negative comment Brown made about him? Knight was very complimentary of LSU and Brown after the 1987 MW Final.

I know broadcasters used to snicker a lot about Brown while he coached and got a big kick out of asking him to explain his"Freak" defense.
Outside the LSU circle a lot of folks considered him a great recruiter, motivator and raconteur who knew little about the x's and o's of B Ball

I admire a man or woman who stands for something and has the convictions to make the world around him/her a better place. Coach Brown has done that a 1000 times over. LSU and Louisiana was fortunate to had a coach like Dale Brown.

This shows how stupidly ignorant some fans are:
Summary of Brown's 25 Years at LSU: 1972-97

He is the only SEC coach to have ever appeared in 15 straight national tournaments and only 11 coaches in NCAA history have made more consecutive NCAA appearances (10). Only the legendary Adolph Rupp of Kentucky has won more games in SEC history. Brown and Rupp are the only SEC coaches that had 17 consecutive non-losing seasons. Only 3 coaches in the SEC have won more conference championships, Adolph Rupp, Joe Hall, and Tubby Smith.

Only 6 coaches in the SEC have led their teams to two Final Fours or more. They are Dale Brown, Billy Donovan, Joe Hall, Rick Pitino, Nolan Richardson, and Adolph Rupp.

On nine occasions Brown was selected as the SEC Coach of the Year or Runner-Up. He was twice chosen as the National Coach of the Year. In a 10 year span from 1977–1986, LSU is the only school to finish in the first division of the SEC. He has the distinction of beating Kentucky more than any coach in the nation. 110 of 160 of his players received their college degrees. He is a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. In 2004 he was inducted as an SEC Living Legend. In 2010, the Tiger Rag, the Bible of LSU sports, ranked Brown in the top 5 of the most influential people in LSU athletics history.

His career record, over 25 yrs was 438-301.
He recruited some of the best talent in the nation.
His lesser talents over performed and most talented teams underperformed.
