Yes and the cards were there for LSU to be National Champions in 1958, 1959, and 1961. They were there for the 1962 Team but they did not take advantage of it. The years from 1958-1962 were some of the best in LSU History.

They do have a legit claim to 1908 and probably should claim it.

I think you may have your years and games mixed up a little. The Cotton Bowl against Texas was after the 1962 season, not 1961.

Also, I don't believe Texas had black players then. If I recall correctly, LSU first played against black players when they beat Syracuse a year or two later.

per LSU Sports.net

The NCAA does not recognize champions from the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (including the Bowl Championship Series), and did not award team championships until 1939.

Yet I see Michigan claiming championships in 1901

I mean, if A&M can claim Big 12 south champs when they finished in 3rd place then why not?

NCAA.com claims 1908 as a split championship between LSU and Penn so it isn't like there is no merit in claiming it.

What about 1908?! NCAA list on their website but LSU can't recognize. Total disgrace to that team and stupid on LSU's part.

1908 team outscoring opponents 442 to 11.

Listed on NCAA website. I have written LSU about this but they do nothing. And we wonder why BAMA claims so many. Because it adds to the allure and it's smart.

I agree. It would kind of stamp a place in history when the power teams were mostly consolidated in the northeast and southern football didn't receive much recognition. Even the legendary 1899 Sewanee team isn't listed by the NCAA.

There is a legitimate argument for the 1908 title, so I doubt anyone would care if LSU claimed it. Oklahoma State quietly claimed a share of the 1945 title last year and they finished #5 in the AP poll that season.
