The budget went to pay CBK $1,000,000 a game.

You need to work on your pitch.

TGBFTL is the same size it's been for decades: 325 members.

And they don't play songs. Wtf...

Been to an LSU and Tech game this year. Tech's band is way more involved.

We lose the band game every weekend. The other band is always noticeably louder and better. This has been happening for a few years now, and it use to not be the case. TGBFTL use to be one of the best in America.

* THE MOST IMPORTANT. Conduct a nation wide search for an experienced Head Director and then let him (Or her) hire the Staff that they want. (Just like in football) * Put all GBFTL members on full "Athletic" scholarship (Like football) * Tiger Band also scheduled for Spring and Summer Class meetings to keep it going and not get stale musically. * Increase size of the band to 350-400 and eliminate all woodwinds. A 350-400 member All-Brass Marching Band would blow up 102,000 seat Tiger Stadium. (See Jacksonville State) * Increase weekly practice time (Monday 3 hours. Tuesday-Thursday 2 hours. Friday 3 hours) Eliminate the Saturday afternoon practice. (If you prepare and rehearse well during the week, it's not needed) Athletic Department funds the entire thing, but keeps their nose completely out of the operation. Overseen, managed and run by the Director, Assistants and Staff. (All of whom have extensive College Marching Band and/or DCI Drum Corps experience) The only purpose being to execute the LSU game day experience and to put on a killer half-time show that people will WANT to watch..........

That’s some pretty solid ideas.

I have to admit that I look forward to Texas A&M band every year they come to Tiger Stadium.

People were tired of playing songs with a "latin" flair for halftime.

I heard a rumor that during the joint halftime show with Southern, the LSU band members held their instruments up to their mouths without playing, because they were unable to learn the song in time.

STOP piping in crappy music. And maybe even let go of some of the ad money and shut that damn stadium announcer down a few notches. Too much !!!!!!! Too many advertisements. Nobody listens to those ads anyway.

As a former member who agrees with a lot of what you say, there is no way any of this happens.

They need to get back to offering more scholarships, more full rides for music majors and bigger stipends for out of state kids, but putting everyone on full scholarship is a pipe dream.

Part of the reason the band’s size was limited and smaller than some other SEC programs was because we got paid to get better talent. If you get a better director and give more scholarships and larger stipends, the current size is fine. They just have to get the quality back to where it needs to be.

There is absolutely no way TGBFTL completely dumps woodwinds. I know some marching band have done it, but this is a music education focused program and has been for many years. You lose a lot there when you cut off such a large chunk of students who want to pursue music ed degrees from even being part of the program anymore.

You bring up some good points, although I disagree with dumping woodwinds. With that said…a perfect example of the lazy hiring you speak of is allowing someone with no music degree to be “assistant director of bands”. How does this even happen? I’d love to find another major university where an equivalent staffing position is also held by someone with no music degree, but I don’t think it exists.

Ohio state only has 220 members.

LSU only had like 375 try out and they cut it down to 325. So your magic idea of a larger band will not work without more people wanting to be in the band.

LSU is one of only like 4 schools that has the band members on stipends. So paying them more is out of line. Most bands, you pay the school to be in the band.

LSU was 270 members just 15 or so years ago.

The band is only bashed when the football team sucks and there is nothing better to talk about.

Didn't Tiger Band used to be under the Athletic Department, and the problems began when it was moved under the control of the School of Music? It happened under F*King's watch and was done as a cash grab by the SOM to get their hands on funds being allocated to Tiger Band.

Move the entire GBFTL operation completely out of the Music School and into the AD.

Damon Talley and his cronies won't allow this to happen. They want the money. Also, didn't Todd Queen do the exact same thing at the school he was at before coming to LSU, which ended up decimating their marching band?

Scott Woodward is a BR native and an LSU alum, so he should know the importance of Tiger Band as part of the LSU gameday experience. If it's true that he doesn't give a damn about what happens to them, then how can they be saved?

The school itself is actually pretty high on the Forbes list, compared to years past.

We are 116 nationally, and 5th in the SEC. To put it in perspective, Tulane is directly above us at 115.
