Why does a 1970’s button say Go to Hell old miss and not ole miss?

Ole just sounds dumb. Sorry, but if I hear someone casually say 'ole' in normal conversation, like "my ole lady, or that ole dog", gonna judge.

I have an LSU V Ole Miss program, but don't remember which year. It has Old Miss on the cover.

Spelling is not a strong suit for some, somebody making the buttons thought they were showing off their education by knowing there's a "d" in "old"....

The nickname “Ole Miss” comes from “Old Miss,” the plantation-era term enslaved people used for the mistress of the house.
Maybe it’s time we stop affirming grown men who insist on self-identifying as a female plantation owner.

I grew up in a family of Ole Miss fans. I am not young and this is the first time I ever heard "Old" Miss.

This was debated back when that “old” button first came out. It was eventually deemed incorrect and should be Ole Miss.
Indeed, the 2-foot thick Old English Dictionary says most uses of this term should be Ol’.
The OED makes exception for two uses — Grand Ole Opry and Ole Miss.
