re: Why do people forget how mediocre Joe Burrow&Jayden Daniels were in YR 1 starting at LSU?

still way better than Nuss this past season. Didn't turn it over and was an animal on the ground

Joe’s 2018 year was overall the second best year an LSU QB had ever had at that point.
Naw. Not even in the modern era.
3rd or 4th.
The best was JR in 2006. Then probably Mett in 2013. Burrow 2018 clearly was not better than either of those years.

Jayden’s 2022 was again probably only second to Joe 2019.
Now THAT season is in the running to overtake JR in 2006 (and clearly wasn't better than Burrow 2019). I gave him the belt over JR in real time.
Jayden's 2022 was a great bit better than Burrow 2018.

And yet he was 0.1 ypa worse than Nuss this year
He also had a better completion rate and rating than Nuss 2024. This is ignoring his rushing component completely.

Nuss was much better as a first year starter.

Not meaning to ignore his running. That was always elite. His reluctant to throw held him back. Once he gained confidence in his reads, he became the heisman level QB we saw. That just was not there his first year.

Was Nuss "reluctant to throw" this year?
Nuss was only 0.1 ypa higher than Jayden in 2022.

No. Does that change anything I said?

Yes. You can't have it both ways. Their ypa were almost identical. You can't say one was reluctant to "let it rip" and the other was not.
I don't care which side of the coin you reverse into, but it needs to apply to both of them. Either both were reluctant to let it rip or or neither were.

Yeah, JD5 was critiqued IMHO overly harshly for 2022. I have some friends who went as far as to say he was "garbage" that year.
But if you objectively look at ONLY his passing number, they are still pretty darn good. Yes he had 3 games that were clunkers and I hear played with the flu in one of them - Arkansas...but I bet if you put his passing numbers only up against the rest of the SEC that year they rank pretty well - and as has been mentioned that's not even considering he ran for 900 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Correct, and that’s why my statement was true.

Nuss had more passing yards, more yards per game, more yards per play and more TDs in fewer games.

They weren’t mediocre, they were above average/good but had the potential, Nuss is not too different.

Daniels was reluctant to throw the ball his first year as a starter here. He trusted his legs more than his throws. Nuss was never reluctant and trusted his throws at the expense of taking off on runs and some check downs. He has too much confidence in his throws at times. Which part of this is incorrect?
Daniels became heisman worthy when he became better with his reads and his willingness to trust his throws. Nuss can possibly become heisman worthy if he gets better at his reads and takes what the defense is giving him.

Don’t forget that Nuss also doesn’t have the luxury of starting NFL receivers to toss it to.

How many fumbles did Daniels have? You obviously didn’t add those to his turnovers. It seems you added Nussmeiers though.

Now explain the difference in his Receivers.
Compare both QBs vs Georgia. Daniels was a fourth year starter. Nuss was a redshirt freshman with no starts.

Neither were mediocre. Both were very good in their penultimate years. They went from very good to great their last years.

This is exactly why I hate our fanbase. They can’t fathom somebody could improve and are too dense to notice improvements by players.

Burrow was more consistent but operated a more traditional offense. JD had very low lows mixed with a couple of big games. Year 2 Burrow was placed in a modern offense with a great play caller and his WRs didn’t drop a ton of balls. JD in year 2 eliminated all the negative plays and trusted his WRs more.

Jayden Daniels combined for 28 touchdowns with only 3 turnovers Year 1. Nuss combined for 29 touchdowns and had 13 turnovers. Thats a big difference.
Daniels had better weapons in 2022 than Nuss did in 2024.
