Why Didn't Charles Alexander do Better in the Heisman Voting in 1977?

Earl Campbell had better stats across the board, and Texas had a better season. He def deserved to win. But guys like Terry Miller and Ross Browner (a D-lineman) were in the top 5 of voting, while Alexander was 9th. Miller had worse stats and Oklahoma State was terrible that season.
Alexander : 311/1,686 17 TDs (LSU 8-4)
Miller : 314,1,680 14 TDs (OSU 4-7)

I wish we could have mustered one more win to help his candidacy. The whole town was so excited that he was even in the mix.

Miller had 1700 yards and 23 TDs in 1976 and was a senior in 1977. Back then the Heisman was more of a career award than it is today.
ETA: That also explains why Alexander was 5th in 1978 with lesser stats than 1977.

This all relates to voters who just really don't have integrity and decide to vote for "their guy" even though they know their guy doesn't deserve it.

Before every game was on tv, voters didn’t know shite

8-3 regular season, Heisman voted before Sun Bowl, stats against Stanford weren't added to season totals.

Loss to UGA he got hurt and fumbled in 24-17 loss, it was a BIG game and SI was there to put him on the cover- but it never happened. Also UGA back McLendon had huge night while CA was hurt.

Kind of weird seeing college RBs with those numbers. When was the last time LSU had a RB with over 1500 yds?

215/1414/16 TD plus 55/453/1 TD receiving.
Fournette had 1953 in '15.
5 power five backs had 1500+ last year.

10 games schedules. Bowl stats didn’t count.

Clyde’s numbers are 15 games, guys from 77 were 11, they did not add bowl stats then

Cecil Collins had over 1,500 yards in 97 and that was just in 3 and a half games.

back then the Heisman was a selling/pr job, our SID department was a joke

The SEC was not respected back then. It was an Alabama-only league. And there was no widespread TV coverage the way there has been for the last 30 years, so Alexander was just a guy that was running up stats against subpar competition.
You see the same thing on Tigerdroppings whenever talent is compared across leagues. Most recently I read one poster wondering if the UCLA pitcher we picked up was any good, because he was just doing it against Pac 10 competition.

Yeah definitely, they based most of their knowledge off statistics they read and also followed who basically was the more popular player at the time.
