I’m not a biggest baseball fan but was just curious did he start to slip in recruiting or was it in game adjustments? He was not bad at all but Jay seems to be on another level.

Seemed to me like he had lost passion for the game after his Dad passed away. Maybe he just needed time away from it.

His health was not near 100% and it started to show. He was in constant pain.
He needed a few years off to get right.

Father Time is undefeated. Paul got old, had health issues, lost family members, has grandchildren, etc. Jay is 30 years younger and basically just has his wife and baseball.

That was an excuse IMO. It was losing his dad. Take it from someone that has 4 fused vertebrae in his neck and arthritis everywhere in my spine that I’ve fought since my 50’s. Losing your parent or a spouse weighs heavily on you especially if your other parent is still living. You become the parent of your parents and have to help them get through a very difficult time in life.
Live long enough and you’ll see.

Mainieri didn’t want to admit the BBCOR era was over when teams started to slug again

Had a poor stretch of recruiting. Coincidentally his last full class was great

He was getting old and he had a serious neck condition that required surgery. He is much better now. The neck part, not the age part. .

Except pitching. Pitching was abysmal when Johnson arrived. Jacob Berry was the best hitter on that first Johnson team, no offense to Morgan or Crews.

I think Mainieri was jsut slow to adapt.
He was slow to the dead bats, and then failed to go after home run hitters when the bats got more pop up again
but he had a great class his last year in.

He had a 1st rd hitter & pitcher (Ty floyd). Thats pretty good if all else fails
Garrett Edwards was going to be really good but we missed the best of him

berry was a better hitter than crews?? based on what exactly? 20 points in BA? berry was never close to crews in any aspect of the game, not just hitting, which is basically all berry was good for.

One of these guys slugged .800 in SEC games and it wasn’t Berry

Why don’t you read what I wrote? Berry was a switch hitter and relied on as such in that line up. He made everyone on both sides of him better. His OPS was damn near equal to Crews. So, Berry was more valuable in that spot.

Jacob Berry was literally just a bat. Thompson, Crews, Pearson, Beloso, Floyd, and Morgan were all PM recruits.
That isn't a knock on Jay because he obviously took them to the next level but PM killed it with his last class or two.

Both sides of the plate? Why do you think they pitched around Berry?

I never felt that Mainieri was elite. Not at the start, not at the finish. He was a good coach, but not a Skip. I feel Jay is a step above, time will tell.
