Why did everyone think Jamarr Chase was better than Justin Jefferson at LSU?
Eyeball test when comparing the two.
It’s that simple

but Jefferson was outperforming expectations even when Etling was QB.
Huh?
In 2017, Jefferson appeared in 2 total games. He had no catches and one rush for 4 yards.

Chase is still the better player, even if by a hair.

With all due respect, the best corner in college football that year was at LSU

they are different types of receivers. Chase is more of a deep threat. Hard to compare 2 guys that play in different offenses. Cincy plays in more games that are affected by the weather. They both have great hands. Chase is faster. In my FFL I draft the one that hasn't been drafted yet...the last few years they have both gone in the first 3 pics. I personally don't think one is better than the other.

Chase made the big plays in 1 on 1 coverage because JJ did all the work underneath to create the 1 on 1 matchups on the outside. It was a pick your poison situation and both were deadly.

The crazy thing is that, as good as those 2 are, in 2019, Marshall was the one averaging 3 TDs a game before he got hurt.
Just insane how much talent was on that team.

The two playoff games were a great example of this.
Oklahoma decided to bracket Chase and he only had 2 receptions meanwhile Jefferson destroyed them.
Clemson decided to leave Chase one on one and once LSU realized that they took advantage of it and Chase went off. Jefferson also had a really good game.

Exactly, there were no answers for our offense that year. They were just incredible.

Fair or not, Jamarr didn't have a brother that underperformed at QB during certain championship games.

remember saying he would be at worst a 2nd rounder after 2018 and Lester Earl told me I was nuts
Not trying to take a jab at LE just stating facts
Wasn’t me. I was telling people in 2018 he was on the path to being an early draft enrollee and I was laughed at. Not everyone you argue with is me. This certainly wasn’t

Chase was a 5-star recruit who looked like a physical specimen his first camp. There was hype about Chase from the day he arrived at LSU.
JJ was a guy who flew under the radar as a recruit and (pre-2019) was largely known as “Jordan Jefferson’s little brother” among casual fans. He went from not recording a single reception in 2017 to our leading WR in 2018. (Although he was behind two other NFL WRs in 2017.)
I think it took people a while to really appreciate how athletic JJ actually was. He was seen as a guy who was reliable, ran good routes, etc. while Chase was the freak athlete. I think by the time we got into the meat of the 2019 season, most people realized they were both special players. Chase did have better measurables though - dude ran a 4.34 at the combine.
I don’t think it’s crazy at all to say Chase was better, but I do think the lack of recruiting hype around Jefferson (combined with plenty of hype around Chase and Marshall) led to Jefferson being undervalued at first by fans.

It depended on the game, pointless to compare them but I would take JJ over Jamarr in the pros

The other two games that were scary were Clemson and Bama, mainly because of who the opponents were and the situations. In both of those games it was JC who Burrow went to for the knockouts.
Florida, as well. gators came out in the 2nd half and took the lead, we tied it then went back up 7, stingley then gets the pick in the end zone, then a few plays later, Burrow throws the knockout punch TD to Chase to go up 14 and the whole stadium does the gator chomp

Jefferson put up better stats at LSU,
You don't really understand stats, do you?
Chase opted out his Junior year at LSU, as a freshman and sophomore at LSU (24 games total) - 107 receptions, 2093 yards, 19.6 YPC, 23 TDs
Jefferson played his Freshman, sophomore, and junior years. (30 games total) - 165 receptions, 2415 yards, 14.6 YPC, 24 TDs
Let's just look at 2019
Chase - 14 games, 84 receptions 1780 yards, 21.2 YPC, 20 TDs
Jefferson - 15 games, 111 receptions, 1540 yards, 13.9 YPC, 18 TDs
What you have is two great receivers. How do you actually pick one of those as better than the other? YPC and TDs maybe? Those favor Chase. Also, if you can still find data on catch rates, you also see that Jefferson had drop issues early at LSU through 2018. Chase had a phenomenal catch rate each season if memory serves.
Ultimately, why would anyone be concerned or even ask this sort of question?

Its not anywhere near that cut and dry. Stats do not tell the whole story. But armchair quarterbacks love to pretend like they do.

That was on that little play where we’d motion CEH wide of Chase, get Chase matched up on a safety or Inside defender and run that half wheel/fade type route with him. We killed teams with that play all year.
