Why aren’t batters swinging when catcher step toward (not on) the plate.

In last week, I have seen two steals of home. In each case, the batter didn’t protect the runner. A simple swing keeps the catcher back and/or hits the catcher resulting in a free base (runner goes back to third).

It happens so fast, the batter can’t see the catcher moving

This thread is dumb

Almost always when stealing home the batter is told not to swing. Imagine a line drive hitting the runner in the face as he is stealing home

As a called play, it’s pretty easy to swing and miss.

Players are coached: if pitcher doesn’t step off rubber, stay in and swing. Keep that catcher back… if two strikes players are taught to hit the catcher.

Not a dumb question at all.

You people act like you would purposely swing a bat and hit another player if you were playing. There isn't a kid out there that wants to swing the bat and take the chance of hitting their teammate stealing, or hitting the catcher with the bat. It's cool to pretend to be a billy bad arse on the internet, but these kids aren't monsters (except Milam I guess).

Yeah but that would have been strike 3 and the game would have been over before the runner reached home plate

So I guess you call a play to tell batter try and hit the catcher if he comes forward. Really? And as you are swinging at the catcher make sure your bat doesn’t come around and hit our runner in the teeth.

no they aren't, too big of a risk to possibly smoke your own guy with a bat or ball.

It was two outs and two strikes, if that batter swings and misses, that runner is irrelevant.

I am not sure about the situation with the others but it might make sense except for the possibility you swing and hit your runner with the bat. Maybe that is why there is some hesitation to swing

I thought about this myself yesterday. I mean I’m not saying take a 100% swing, but just tap the catcher enough to get an interference call. But, it would only be interference and not a balk (potentially), so the runner on 3rd would have to go back.

They aren’t talking about a real swing, see ULL’s play in the 2000 CWS.

People that have actually played baseball have been coached to swing high to keep the catcher back. You aren’t going to hit a sliding team mate when you swing a bat chest high.

lol

Find me some videos of all the players swinging on a steal of home

If everyone is coached that way there should be plenty

Where do you people get this shite from? You are so sure, too lol.

The batter said after the game he had no idea what was going on.

No, they aren't. They are almost always coached not to swing and to vacate the box to avoid getting called for interference. On the rare occasion a coach wants them to swing they are told to swing only if they can hit the ball to the right.

That would be an out under section 4 part h of the NCAA rulebook.

quote:

A Strike
SECTION 4
. A strike is:
...
h. Awarded if the batter deliberately steps back in the box or swings in such a
manner to attempt to create catcher’s interference. If the swing hits the catcher
or the mitt, the batter shall be called out.
All base runners shall return to the
base occupied at the time of the pitch;

So, hit the catcher with a metal bat intentionally to try and score a run? I bet you think that someone should have their head thrown at for staring down a homerun too long.

Because you don’t hit and run with a guy on 3rd. You can bunt to protect him but that wasn’t a squeeze. It was a straight up steal.
