Top 20 is rough. I would struggle to list 20 corners in college football I think are better than Kary Vincent, and Stingley is starting over him.

Considering I think Stingley will be the best defensive(if not best overall) LSU Tiger of all time.. no I wouldn’t be surprised. His presence will be felt early and often.

Since he is rated so high, I would not be surprised if he is the best CB for his junior year.

As talented as Stingley is, it is probably expecting too much too soon for him to be the best CB in the nation this season.

Even Patrick Peterson had his growing pains freshman year. Then he exploded in 2009 and QBs stopped throwing at him.

Stingley will be the best in the country in time. But not this year.

He'll still be pretty good.

People love freshmen phenoms.

Also the NCAA and broadcasters need guys they can sell 3 years.

I think Charles Woodson is in that discussion as well. I think Stingley can crack the top 20 for corners nationally this season, and I think he will be one of the best punt returners in the nation right away. I’m sure he won’t be perfect out of the gate, but the dude is seriously a different breed.

Everyone has to take their lumps. Not this year but he'll have plenty of time to prove himself as a top DB.

How well did Surtain do? He had all the hype.

For real, but I will say I never heard the “ready for the NFL now” line from scouts about Surtain. I personally think Stingley is and was the better prospect anyway.

Has a true freshman ever won the Thorpe?

Doubt it. And tbh even if he was clearly the best CB in the country this year I don’t think he would have a shot in hell at getting the Thorpe. It’s just not something I can see them giving to a freshman under any circumstances. I’m sure someone will be in here in a second to tell me about all the times a freshman has won it though.

Consistency is what will separate the top CBs from him after his freshman year. He will have some great highlights right out of the gate though.

He certainly has to potential to get that consistency by midseason but that is still a tall order. I expect great highlights with some busts to go with them the first six games. After that, the nation will start taking notice. His highlights alone will be undeniable whether returning kicks or at CB.

This year? No

I think he is gonna be very good, but part of elite players is they are usually very experienced. Stingley's learning curve is going to be a lot shorter than most because of how athletic he is but it's still going to be there.

Why does this matter. Why do we care. We need Stingley to be a very effective corner. In our defense. The best corner stuff will sort itself out later. We are not going to beat Bama with our corners. If we cannot slowdown the run and put respectable pressure on the QB it will not matter who our corners are. Whatever
