Who would be surprised if Stingley was the best CB in the country?

This year. I want straight answers. I personally think he can do it.

not this year, but his stats might be better this year than next just because he might get more opportunities if QB's are avoiding Fulton. No good options for opposing QB's this year.

Even if he is the best this year he will not receive credit for it because all the attention and praise outside of our own fan base goes to draft eligible players

Not this year.

Give him a full calender year in the program and, barring injury, he WILL be next year.

Wouldn't surprise me. Hasn't he already been designated as the kick returner? Run back a few kicks, pick off a few passes and he's on the national map.

Honestly, this is what I thought originally as well. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that other than experience not much of anything will be different this year than next year. I will admit experience can be a big deal though. Stingley just doesn’t strike me as the nervous under pressure type.

Experience isn’t just about being nervous under pressure though.

Experience is learning how to defeat high caliber athletes. It’s about learning how to defend more complex route trees. It’s about learning how to use your hands on the body down field and get away with it.

Being nervous under pressure is the least of it.

Don't know why people hold a kid who hasn't played a single down in a college game to these standards. You are setting yourself up for disappointment. He's not even the best CB on the team.

I can 100% guarantee that someone will call him a bust as soon as he gives up a long pass. This board has a CB to rag on all year. It's not going to be Fulton.

It’s not like I’m holding him to that standard. I said I think he can do it. I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if he wasn’t the best CB in the SEC or even close to it.

Also, I’m not the one making up the hype. When the most common praise for a player from actual scouts is that if it was a thing that happened he could have gone to the NFL immediately, he is probably pretty good.

You don’t think he can do those things?

Dude, Pump your brakes... He's elite but he's going to have a few freshman growing pains this season. It is what it is. Let him play a meaningful snap first.

yep, couldn’t have put it better. and once QBs are throwing away from sting they’ll have to throw at Elias Ricks and Cordale Flott and Mo Hampton. I love our DBs so much

I think it takes anyone time to get used to the speed and talent of the college game. Especially in the SEC.

I would be surprised if any player was the best in the country at his position as a freshman.

It happens. Every now and then a Trevor Lawrence type player comes along at any position but don’t act like it’s not surprising when it happens and don’t act like it’s a foregone conclusion 5 days into fall camp.

I get what you are saying but where did you gather I thought it was a foregone conclusion? Like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t anymore than I would be surprised if he was.

I would absolutely be surprised if he was the best in the country.

I’d be shocked if he was the best on the team. Even PP7 had growing pains

Physically, sure. And I could see a highlight or two that are just off the charts impressive.

But he needs a year or two to refine his skills and hone his instincts. The truly great lock down CBs are absolute tacticians. I think of guys like Champ Bailey.

He could easily get there, but not year 1 in the SEC. He was playing high school ball a year ago.

Like I said I’m not saying I think he will. I’m saying I think he can and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. I agree with all of you that the adjustment is going to be the biggest factor in how good Stingley is this season.
