1) To have a jersey retired at LSU, an athlete must have completed intercollegiate competition for LSU a minimum of five years prior to nomination.
2) Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach.

There are only five jersey numbers in the entire history of LSU that were retired before the bylaws were enacted in 2007. These numbers will NEVER be worn again:
Pistol Pete's, Pettit's, Shaq's, Cannon's, and Skip's.

Any jersey retired under the current bylaws is not really retired. If you can't ever use numbers again, pretty soon you run out of numbers. The bylaws allow them to "retire" a lot more numbers and then just take the old names down as needed to free up numbers. To this end, from 1860 to 2007, only FIVE numbers were retired. Since 2007, nine have been "retired".

No one will wear it for a year or two.

If not retired it would only be given to a special player

This. Retiring numbers is stupid. There is already a shortage of numbers. In fact , any retired numbers should be unretired

Comparing what GD did to what JB did is laughable

He is the most decorated defensive player in school history. By that logic, no defensive player should ever have their jersey retired.

Yeah we’ve had so many senior star defensive players who won a national championship to go along with every individual award they were up for....

We already have 2 numbers like that which is more than most schools. I don’t want any more Jonathan Giles.

Could retire it from that position.

So no QB can ever wear 9 again. That way you won't run out of numbers.

LSU already has one playing with it on defense. Is he supposed to just say frick it?

No. The school should retire the number and he can pick another.

Man Joe Burrow is not just some "All American" or "award winner".

No one gets to wear #20; no one should get to wear #9.

Why not just retire it for every Heisman winner? I thinks that’s more than deserving. If we get to the point where we’re “running out of numbers” because we have too many, that’s a problem I want to have.

Joe just had the best season any QB has ever had in the entire history of college football. Retire that shite and build the statue.

I don’t agree with retiring it. You have to take into account that this game will played for the next 500 years here at LSU. Of those 500 years if just 40 players are as good as Burrow then you’ve retired 40 jerseys. Unless they don’t care about that potential pitfall go ahead retire it, or if they are okay with giving players 101-199 numbers.

Pretty much. The only way we should retire a number is for a kid who goes on to do something heroic in real life. Other than that, you put guys like Billy cannon and Joe Burrow in a ring of honor, but still use their numbers.

I don't think it will be played 50 more years.
