Purely as a head coach, Dinardo was better. He had been a successful head coach at Vandy - he was not able to repeat his success over the first 3 years at LSU, but did a marvelous job of turning around a program in steep decline, and did a fairly decent rebuilding job - as we often have to remind the Sabanistas - Saban definitely did not have to start from square 1 - his improvements were tangible in the facilities and in mindset, but the much of the purely football foundation was already in place in 2000, thanks in large part to Dinardo's tenure.
From an Xs and Os standpoint, there is little question Archer was the better coach. He coached DBs at Miami(FL) and LSU. He coached linebackers for the Steelers for 6 years - 6 pretty good years for them at the position. He coordinated excellent defenses at LSU. I would take him today as a LBer coach, and perhaps even a DC in a pinch.
Again, as a dose of perspective - Mike Archer is younger than Nick Saban and only a few weeks older than Les Miles - yet was head coach at LSU in 1990.

Hallman vs Archer is a better question.
Archer has a clear advantage over Hallman on football knowledge and game-planning, game-day coaching.
Hallman has an advantage over Archer in recruiting. But, then again, so would my dead dachshund.
Man, they were both awful. Question is: If Hallman had been handed the keys in '87, how quickly would the program have destructed compared to Archer's timeline.

Dinardo was SEC coach of the year at Vanderbilt.
At Vanderbuilt.
He would have been here for a while if not for Tepper. He didn't realize until it was too late that you can recruit better character than he was getting.

Mike Archer should never had been hired in the first place. The reason it happened was because a group of players went before the Board of Supervisors and lobbied them to hire him. As much as I respected the players for their on the field performances, it was an "inmates running the asylum" situation.
This all lead to the disaster that was the 90s for LSU football.

If he were here today with the talent we have now, he'd be much, much better than he was in the 90's.
Only if he fired Lou Tepper.

Yes. Dinardo was a good coach.
Neither Archer nor Hallman was a good coach, but Archer appears to basically be a good person, while Hallman is a scumbag.

As did Bill Arnsparger.

Conspiracy Theory!
Maybe Arnsbarger lobbied for Archer because he knew 1) he was going to Florida as AD, and 2) Archer would not be effective, thus eliminating the competition........
I kid, I have no idea whatsoever!

If someone told me this happened I would not be surprised !

As I watched that season unfold, I had little doubt that BA coached his final year at LSU with the Fla. A.D. gig already in his back pocket.
As to why he pushed MA to replace him, I have no firm idea. I do know there was no love loss between BA and the LSU AD at that time.

Nice...original. Let me try...your a dickhead Jimbeam.
I think GD was better but not by much. Despite nice moments for each, in the end, they were disappointing.

Many ppl thought bill set LSU up
Archer was and is a better coach than hallman. Curley is the worst LSU coach in history and one I the worst in sec history
Archer win 10 games here. A sec championship. Yes screwed recruiting up. But still was hc and did those things here, just way way too young

Archer was just too young IMO. He also had this crazy idea that he couldnt compete with the Miami's and florida states of the world with Louisiana talent. So he went to houston and signed a bunch of players who didn't pan out for whatever reason.

Dinardo by a long shot....Archer set LSU program so far back i was afraid it would never emerge as a national or SEC power again...worst coach in LSU history if not NCAA football overall!!!!

IMHO, Dinardo's fatal flaws at LSU were not able to get all of his top recruits to actually enroll and his choice of coordinators in consecutive seasons in Tepper and the McConnell. If he would have avoided both, he would have made LSU a top 10 program annually.

Dinardo...and it's not really close considering who they followed. If Dinardo would've never hired Tepper he may have eventually won a NC
