If you look at the wins he had as USC and LSU as interim you would realize he played with a lot more talent than the opponents he defeated.

When he faced a team with equal or more talent, he lost (Florida and Bama). Also had a hideous 3-TD loss to UCLA while at USC. So he had multiple losses in less than 10 games as interim at each school. I think there are a lot of coaches that could've accomplished that tbh

Consider at that point he is forced to use the playbook and roster from the previous staff. Miles lost 5 in a row to Bama and was still trying to beat them with the same game plan every time. He is a mental midget. To be completely honest, I had no idea if coach O could win the SEC or an NC.

But did I think he was an upgrade? Without a doubt. I would put miles around the middle of the pack when ranking the 130 Divison 1 coaches.

THIS

I thought that the staff remaining intact was a positive.
Told everyone that since the decision was made, O had to be given a chance.
The man has come a looong way since the Troy debacle.

I couldn’t understand all the negativity when O was announced.

I would say more than half of this was the sheep that listen to Matt Moscona. I came across some of them myself.

At the end of the day alleva hired o on a prove it deal and he did exactly what LSU fans wanted by installing a competent offense although he had a few hiccups along the way trying to transition offense to his vision
If it didn’t work you didn’t burden yourself with another large buyout and you knew o was capable of maintaining recruiting
He missed bad with Canada but knocked it out of the park with brady
The steady Ensminger also played a big part

I for one was certain things could only get better.

i'm with you.
i love my Tigers and CLM was a great hire initially. his game management and scheme got tired before the 2011 season.

Aleva missed his chance to remove CLM in 2015.
it was time for him to go after 2009 season.

Weird way to admit you were wrong. But ok

Nothing weird about it. Of course I was wrong about O (however Brady and Aranda are big outliers. This season will be telling).

But again, there was literally no evidence, no view of that hire - his record and results, DP, his domestic abuse thing, his lack of interest from any P5 school, his lack of really coaching one side of the ball, all of the bad Ole Miss press, etc. Nothing pointed to him being the guy you wanted in charge of a multi-million dollar football program.

He had no history that pointed to him being a good head coach, and his only stop was a disaster with no other chances after. That's how bad of a program he ran. No one else heard anything from the inside of the program that would have said "He's still a solid hire." Nothing.

The only way to view it was a step up (a lateral view of the hire was probably the best way to look at it), was to take all evidence and results off the table and look at it from another perspective - Louisiana, wanting ANYTHING different from Miles, etc.

What empirical evidence was there to think he would be? If I thought he was open minded enough to bring in a guy like Brady to completely open up the offense like he did..I would have thought differently.

When he was first announced as interim, I thought he might be the right choice. However, O lost my confidence with that Florida game. When the hire was made, I thought it wasn't the worst thing that could happen, but it seemed really lazy and cheap. I was cautiously optimistic, but felt like the situation was sub-optimal.

What started to win me over was how quickly several issues changed for the better. Clock management and situational play calling seemed to improve dramatically almost immediately. O seemed open to changing the offense, though it had mixed results early on with the Canada experiment. When special teams were struggling, he addressed it, and they quickly improved. QB's were struggling, and he made a change. That was a huge improvement over miles.

Coach O definitely gained some respect from me in 2018 enough to feel like it was worth continuing this experiment, and then he exceeded all expectations in bringing us to the Promised Land in 2019. Congrats to O! I doubted you at times, supported you at times, but you went out and proved yourself and assuaged all doubts the right way, by doing it on the field. Thank you.
