I thought Laron Landry was the best I had ever seen until the run of guys we’ve had after him in the last decade(ish). Jamal Adams #2.
My tidbits:
Casanova was before my time.
I loved Chad Jones, but for some reason I think he is a TAD bit overrated.
Grant Delpit was great in 2017 and elite in 2018 and I would say he was the best, but he took a huge step back in his junior year.
Someone said it earlier and I agree; Brandon Taylor was a helluva FS. He just wasnt flashy.
Craig Steltz was awesome.
Eric Reid was pretty damn consistent.

quote:Robinson was a RB at LSU. I mean the guys played multiple positions back then. Stovall was a hell of an athlete.
Johnny Robinson,

Delpit is the most overrated safety to play for LSU.
He was overrated last year for sure with his injury (though he closed out the season strong and had some big games), but in 2018 he was incredible and almost took over games by himself.

I'd take Steve Rehage on my team over Eric Reid all day, every day.
That guy was an OG #7.

Jamal Adams was the best.
Cassonova mostly played cb at LSU and is one of the best five players to ever wear the purple and gold.

There was a pic several years ago of DBU when Adams and Co were there. Tommy Casanova day a legit 6’2” was as big or bigger than all of them. He was the best pure football player I ever saw in an LSU uniform. With that for all those people that say he was a safety, he played corner at LSU and IMO was the best ever and that includes better than Peterson. At 200 he was also physical which is why the NFL made him a safety. Of course I’m a little biased as I graduated from LSU in ‘72. LINK
Thank you for that. Good article. I was born in 77 and as a kid growing all you heard was Cannon and Casanova. I never had the pleasure to see him live but my father has. He said he was electric.

That is a most excellent list, all of whom I saw play. I perhaps would add Jerry Stovall and Johnny Robinson, each of whom played two ways at LSU and went on to become all pro safeties.
The only possible player I saw who might challenge is Tommy Casanova who was All Pro safety with Bengals. . With his speed and explosiveness, he is in discussion as best athlete to play at LSU. However, he was not a safety at LSU. He played CB and some half back and was a great returner. He was three time AA.
Therefore, I concur with others that Jamal Adams body of work thus far puts him an arguable smidge ahead of the other worthy members of your list.

To those saying TM7 and Honey Badger, you are forgetting he was CB while here. His playmaking ability made him a more natural fit at safety in the NFL rather than keeping him away from the ball in coverage, but in college he was a CB.
From the guys I saw, I think Laron Landry and Ryan Clark were probably near the top of the list. Tough to pick a true #1. The season Eric Reid had during the shoulda-been year was just amazing. He may have been the best one in a one-year vote. Tough to forget Chad Jones and the big hits. My favorite from playstyle to personality was probably Jamal Adams, though. Man what a tough list to sort out ...
1a. L. Landry
1b. R. Clark
2a. J. Adams
2b. E. Reid

Adam’s tackling and instincts were incredible.
His speed is also underrated - remember when he ran down Lamar Jackson? Team leader as well.
Reid and delpit had great sophomore years, I think Adam’s had a better overall college career.
I don’t think Chad Jones was as good as those three.
If Mathieu would have played safety full time he’d probably have been the goat at the position.
Also Brandon Taylor had always been underrated like someone else mentioned.

All those memories just came flooding back. I probably laughed more at the signing of Ratphuc than I had any right to. I know Liffort was proud.
