re: Who here is not worried about the defense at all?

If we are healthy I don’t have much concern.
My only question is about whether Aranda understands and accepts that “good defense” with this offense might look different than “good defense” with our historical defenses.
We will probably be better off giving up a few big plays a game being over aggressive if we can force turnovers and/or get off the field quick enough to prevent the defense from seeing too many snaps.

You're sippin too much kool-aid if you're not AT ALL concerned. But, I'm not gonna sit here and say I think last weekend is an indicator of how good this D really is. We had some of our best players not play to their ability. I guarantee Fulton doesn't play that bad the rest of the year. Tackling will improve. Coverage will be better.
There are legit concerns on that side of the ball, but I think they get fixed.

I’ll check in. Only concern is depth at CB.

No worries at all. They were gassed because of the heat and the speed of the offense putting them back on the field. We won't always have to put that kind of pressure on them and it will get cooler as the season goes on.
They'll be top 5 in the country when Aranda's done.

I'm concerned that we appear clueless and incapable of stopping teams that spread the ball out and have a mobile quarterback - much like what we will see from Alabama. I would hate to have to end up in a shootout with them like we did with Texas.
I'm also a little disappointed so far that Chaisson appears human. I bought into the hype that he was going to be an unblockable superhero capable of taking on double teams and fighting off holds.
Fulton does not look as good as he did last year. It looks to me like he is playing on a hurt foot still. Several times they picked on him and he was not able to go up for the ball. Instead, he stumbled into the receivers a lot.
also, all last year there was a lot of talk about getting pressure on the quarterback and Coach O was disappointed that we were not able to do that often enough. It appears that this is still an issue either because we don't have players that can do it or because Aranda is not dialing up pressure. There were very few plays with aggressive play calling. Either way whatever we were doing was not working at all and I don't know why they just stuck with the same game plan and got scored on over and over and over. Insanity.

they played phenomenally until the second half, when they were on the field for 2/3 of the half. That's a long time to be out there.
Yep, things changed in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half. If LSU doesn't go 3-and-out to start the half, I believe the game turns out a bit differently. The defense could have also gotten a stop at some point on that 19 play drive, a drive with 7 UT first downs and three 3rd down conversions.
That was the injuries/cramps started happening en masse. IVs at half time could have helped too.

I can't say that I am not worried at all but I am definitely not worried anymore than I worried last year.
On my rewatch of the game, I noticed that for the most part (minus our gammeplan on Duvernay) our players were put in position to make plays but just didn't get the job done in the second half. It looked to me like Texas had to make tons of plays with our guys all over them, the fatigue just made our guys a step slow which lead to Texas's success. Props to the UT guys cuz they stepped up and made the plays.
Also our pass rush was pretty good when we actually unleashed our guys and mixed up our looks. The problem was that we didn't truly unleash the pass rush until just before halftime and by mid 3rd quarter we were gassed by the 19 play drive.
My main concern was with our inability to get off the field on 3rd and long. It was very frustrating and left our D on the field for even longer than they should have been.
So in my mind, we just need to avoid getting in shootouts in 100 degree heat and we will be fine.

I agree Sasquatch. The long drive in the 3rd really took it out of the defense. THat was a pivotal point in the game. The D was not the same after that.
I'm mostly worried about the DL. They couldn't get any pressure on the QB and were just stood up during pass rush. This doesn't help the DBs at all. yes the UT OL is very good, IMO but I also didn't see a lot of creativity from Aranda on blitzes or stunts. I need to rewatch the game, but it seems when they did it, it was successful.
But I'm not worried about the DB's. Little concerned about the LB's, but that maybe because I miss DW and who can replace that.
But going up against the good OL's like Bama, who like to run it a lot as well, the DL is my biggest concern.

Geno Smith put up 400 plus on our D in 2011 so I am not worried at all.
I think this is a little bogus. Sure, West Virginia got a lot of yards, but it wasn't a competitive game. Defenses tend to play soft in games like that.

we only lost two players off last years defense ( great ones though). We added some very good new talent (stingley and Ika). Some players that didn't factor last season have stepped up (Chaisson, Shelvin and Clark). Plus everyone has another year of experience and development under their belts (Lawrence, Fehoka, Delpit, et al, etc.). NOt worried in the least. Defense is going to be a strength of this team (along with the offense, special teams (Stingley), and coaching (Orgeron and Brady, etc.)

The hot weather probably affected us some, but....the tackling definitely has to improve.....honestly, Texas could probably hang some points on anybody in the country.....

I agree. The half time rehydration process did not work. There's no excuse for that.

I'm not worried in the sense that I don't think very many defenses could've done a lot better. Texas will score on everyone they play.
Also I think it's a pipe dream idea to think that any defense will consistently play lights out when paired with an offense that can score in less than a minute.

Clean up the tackling and it will go a long way to fixing the defense
They just ran through our tackle attempts

Personally I'm worried about confusion on LSU defensive side and the number of plays the defense had to be on the field, as well as the time of possession being won by Texas. We scored too fast, especially in second half.

This disparity goes back to that one drive in the 3rd quarter. 19 plays...7:17 off the clock. Had a cascade effect of tiring out the LSU defense and having injuries that led to more success by the UT offense in the 4th quarter.
In total, UT had the ball for 7 minutes more than LSU, and ran 17 more plays. Defense gets a stop early in that UT drive and things are different. LSU's offense doesn't go 3 and out and things are different.

We lost multiple guys in the secondary that played a lot of ball, though: Terrence Alexander played in every game and made 5 starts (graduated), Kelvin Joseph would be nice on this team for depth played in 11 games (transfer), as would Mannie Netherly played in 11 games (transfer).
Clearly they aren't the quality of player of Greedy Williams or Devin White, but we could very well miss them at some point. Joseph would have been an asset in the game whenever Fulton went out for a while.
