I was told it takes 5-6 years to turn a program around especially with crippling sanctions and a dark cloud of make believe.

Is McNeese still in year -1 or 0 under Wade? I can’t keep track of what year it is

Reality suggest it didn't hurt McMahon "badly". KJ Williams was a highly sought after transfer. He had several power conf. options besides LSU and it's ominous "cloud of uncertainty". Yet he chose to follow his HC. Justice Hill didn't play well in his one season at LSU. But following the 21-22 season at Murray St. where he was the 3rd leading scorer and averaged 5 assist per game, he had other options besides LSU. Yet, he also followed McMahon.

There is very little doubt in my mind that recruits weighed the risks of the NCAA sanctions as they decided upon schools. I believe that CMM was able to convince a few to come DESPITE that risk. Obviously, the players that followed CMM from Murray State must've liked and felt loyal to him. That can outweigh many things. Unfortunately for CMM, only Williams was SEC quality.

quote:

Tyrell Ward was a high 4/5 star recruit. He was initially a Wade target. He had other options besides LSU. Yet, he chose LSU. Jalen Reed, a top 70 recruit, decommitted from Florida after their coaching change. He had offers from other major programs...and chose LSU. Shawn Phillips was a fringe top 100 prospects with offers from multiple major conf. schools. He likewise chose LSU.

All of these were late in the recruiting process. I don't know what the situations were at the other schools that offered them, but I don't think their choices were that abundant. They also probably felt they had a better chance for PT at LSU. It's hard to know what convinced them to come to LSU, but they were not likely to be impactful as freshmen anyway.

quote:

Adam Miller was a starter on a No. 1 seed Illinois team. He chose to transfer to LSU because of Wade and was the very first player to express heartbreak when Wade was fired. He had options to go elsewhere that didn't have a "cloud of uncertainty". Same for Wilkinson who visited Texas Tech while in the portal. The point is ALL of those guys had options outside of LSU. So them choosing to attend LSU flies in the face of the narrative that the "black cloud" significantly hurt recruiting. If that were the case LSU would have been left with nothing but JUCO guys and mid-major players off the scrap heap with nowhere else to go. Yet, the roster McMahon assembled was projected by everyone who followed college basketball to be a mid-tier SEC team in what was expected to be a strong SEC. The narrative that LSU was left with nothing ONLY developed after McMahon did a terrible job and finished with a record far worse than anyone predicted.

The 3 players that did stay probably just liked LSU, or had other factors keeping them at LSU. Despite all of the movement, I think many players don't like moving, and many are loyal to teams. They probably also liked CMM, so I don't think the modest recruiting success is indicative that the looming sanctions didn't affect CMM's recruiting. It is hard, maybe impossible to prove, that LSU's recruiting would've been far better without the looming sanctions, but I think it is very likely that it would've been.

Certainly easier for most SEC teams.
However, LSU lost to Nichols.
McNeese humiliated Nichols three times.

The point of the post was to refute the narrative, which only developed during the string of 14 losses, NOT the 11-1 fools gold start, that he could not get any players because of the “ominous cloud” hanging over the program. Several of the guys he signed that year had other good options besides LSU under investigation…yet they still chose to come to LSU. If you have other good options outside of a program under investigation why choose to go there…unless you really aren’t worried about the investigation.

The point of highlighting the projections/predictions was to illustrate no one thought, before the season, LSU had a “horrible roster”. Otherwise, LSU would have been picked much lower. While LSU’s roster probably was somewhat overrated, that narrative of “no talent” only developed during all of the losing to, for some, absolve McMahon of any blame. Basically “he did the best he could with what he had”. Perhaps the opposite is true. He did a bad job with what he had. The reality, as it often does, likely falls in the middle.

Now we can debate this issue in perpetuity…and probably will…at least until McMahon wins big or is fired. However, I think regardless of what side of the argument you’re on, you can agree next season he will have real expectations from ALL of the fanbase. Expectations which exceed trying to crunch numbers to squeeze into the NIT

Maybe not all of the fanbase. All except the ones who don’t deal exclusively in absolutes and speak in hyperbole all the time. Reasonable people should expect improvement next season.

Based on McNeese State basketball history vs LSU basketball history, it's easier to make the NCAAT at LSU by a wide margin over making the NCAAT at McNeese State.

And this team didn't "get hot" in the Southland Conference tournament and win it as a 5 seed. They dominated the conference from game 1 through the end of the season.

Why are we coddling a millionaire? Every other coach we’ve had in the past 60 years has at least had some success yet this guy is treated like some porcelain doll. You’re at LSU getting more talent than most of the country, there’s no excuse. For example Houston has had a grand total of 2 five star recruits in Sampson’s entire tenure there. He has 1 top 100 recruit in his starting lineup, we have 3. He has 3 top 100 recruits on his roster, we have 5 so don’t tell me it’s the players fault or we don’t have enough talent.
