Where does the false idea that Les Miles liked to plug guards in at LT come from?

I really don’t know where you guys get some of your dumb BS from. I saw someone write this in a thread from earlier.

His strategy was actually the opposite. I went to a luncheon with Mike Detillier and he discussed the Les Mile OL strategy with us. He said that Les liked to recruit mostly tackles instead of guards because tackles are more versatile. If a tackle isn’t quite quick enough for LT, he can easily be plugged in at guard instead.

Just look at our LT’s over the years and see if Les liked tackles or not.

2005: Andrew Whitworth (Future NFL tackle)
2006-2009: Ciron Black (he had the talent to play tackle in the NFL if not for ruining his knees in college and having to give up football altogether)
2010: Joseph Barksdale ( Future NFL tackle)
2011: Chris Faulk ( Future NFL tackle if he hadn’t blown his knee out)
2012: Josh Dworazcyk (would not have been playing LT that season if Chris Faulk had not blown his knee out)
2013-2014: Lael Collins (Future NFL tackle)
2015: Jerald Hawkins (Future NFL tackle)
2016: Karl Malone( this is the only true guard playing tackle on the whole list)

Karl Malone is the only true guard on the list who started at LT, and that was because Miles and company recruited OT poorly from 2014-2016. It wasn’t because Miles liked playing guards at tackle. It was because of recruiting the tackle position poorly.

Short guys without super long arms.

Ciron Black was under 6-4 and would have likely been a OG in the NFL

La'el was an emergency OT but did his real elite damage at OG in the NFL.

Malone was a OG all the way

How many 6-6+ guys did we have playing OT for us?

Also, why did you only use LTs?

So you saw ONE post, from ONE poster, in a different thread, say this and instead of replying in said thread you decided to start your own?

in his last years we had few tackles, and that is what we remember. i remember we only had one tackle (Ethan Pocic) on the oline and he was playing center. I agree that in his earlier career we did have some quality college tackles.

Jerald Hawkins, KJ Malone, Chris Faulk was honestly built for being a guard too. Collins could’ve gone either way

It might have been his strategy to get OT’s and want to plug them in at OG if needed, but that wasn’t what happened. It was because of his archaic offense that he couldn’t get legit OT’s in quantity, to implement that plan. He decimated our oline almost as bad as O decimated our defense…. Almost

I think the idea that Miles did boneheaded shite year in and year out stems from the fact that Miles did boneheaded shite year in and year out.

I do remember a class where we recruited 4-5 tackles and I don’t think but 1-2 actually made it all the way through freshman year (I think it was the chidi-okeke class)

Which is why he never had a winning season at LSU?

I didn’t know anyone still cared enough about Les Miles to defend him

Les underperformed here, based on the elite talent he brought in.

It’s because tackles are overrated when you just run straight ahead.

The notion that Les liked using guards as tackles is wrong. The real issue is that Les was a lazy recruiter. He was good enough to get the low hanging Louisiana talent plus a few more that dropped in his lap from out of state, but he was n’t going to work like a dog to fill the needs that grew out of that.

Because Louisiana is not great at producing offensive linemen, our offensive lines were not very talented. At every other position, except QB, we had about 75% of our starters make NFL rosters. At offensive line, and QB, it was more like 20%.

Because it’s true. We had few “prototypical” LTs while he was here. Yeah, he recruited kids that “played LT” in high school, but none of them were really NFL type LTs. Thus the reason none of them played LT in the NFL.
