When did we start the "L" hand gesture for LSU?

The past couple years I've been seeing it on tv a lot. Has anyone else noticed this?

I first noticed Bowe and Buster Davis doing it back in 04 after the Az St game - I know there's a photo of it somewhere - I'll see if I can find/

I remember seeing a lot of track photos with athletes doing it when I was a freshman in 05. I wasn't surprised when I saw Lolo do it on gameday.

I like it, but I can see it easily being made fun of by other schools

I never noticed either, but since you brought this up, when will someone hold up the "L" with their right hand, a "U" with the left and then shake your head side to side as to suggest "NO" for the "S"?
This could catch on with the right song with the LSU band.....or maybe not. But if it does, I started it....

An SI season preview magazine in '97 or '98 had a full page photo of Kevin Faulk from the year prior and he was doing that gesture with both hands. That was the first time I saw it.

This has been around a while. Here's a pic of Marquis Hill doing it in '03.

How does this even apply?

I don't think he's flashing an "L"; I think he's just motioning that LSU is #1.

No, it's the L. That year Hill, Spears, Clayton, etc. did it a lot.

This is true

I've seen the "L" from time to time, but Sam Monty does this in games quite often.
I credit him with making it popular.

Don't mind it either, just have been noticing it more is all. Not an issue, just an observation.

literally never heard of it until this thread.

I know players have done it but you're just now seeing it regularly on tv from the fans.

I really shouldn't have mentioned that. But my intent was to keep it clean bc I know how the site can be at times. It typically is the AA fans you see on TV doing it and figured the thread would get racist remarks and be derailed before it got started.

Yep...I think it was 2003.
