a link was provided which seems to explain it quite well. Seems like the OP could have just googled it himself.

Either way you have 4 guys on the line and 3 guys behind them in base sets. How are these two defenses different and why do you need different personnel up front to run one or the other? Is it the gap assignments? Explain it to me like I'm 5.

Well little Olgoi, it's like this, some really big men line up on an imaginary line in the middle of the field, in a 4-3
there are 4 really big men & in a 3-4 there are only 3 really big men.
When the QB on the other side of the line claps his hands
together all the really big men run toward each other and high five and dance with each other to see if the QB likes the dance or not.
Anything that happens after that will have to wait till your 6 years old!!!!

OK, LSU will have five DB'S on the field most of the time. Can it be called a 4-3 or a 3-4?

Usually when we do that we have a safety playing in a linebacker position

Other wise it’s a sub or nickel package. Most commonly used is a 4-2-5.

In modern football, they substitute so many packages in that it really doesn't matter if you call yourself a 4-3 or 3-4.

Bunch of assholes on here giving this guy a hard time for asking a legit question.

I saw threads on this site that said we should intentionally lose to UGA in SEC Championship.

I have seen some dumbasses that say Aranda was a bad DC.

I saw some idiot say last night that if the Bama game went 2 more minutes, LSU would have lost.

And remember, most people were unhappy with Oregeron and there were also a lot of people that thought Joe Burrow was not worth taking in when he transferred.

In other words, most of the posters here are really fricking dumb and everyone is gonna be a dick to this guy

ETA: honestly, my guess is that the average douche is being such an arse because they didnt know the answer to the question without googling themselves. Truth.

This is the correct answer.

Your EDGE rushers are DLinemen and are bigger than K’Lavon. They don’t just pressure from one edge of the line.

In a 3-4 the defensive linemen are mainly responsible for tying up the offensive linemen and clogging as many of the gaps between them as possible to funnel running backs to the linebackers who are attacking the open gaps to create pressure. The linebackers also have the responsibility of defending the run and pass.

In the 4-3, the defensive line is responsible for creating pressure in the offensive backfield by trying to have one defensive lineman occupy two offensive linemen while the other three are one on one with the remainder of the o-line and attempt to shed blocks to attack the ball carrier directly themselves. The linebackers are mainly responsible for protecting the run and pass and are less responsible for putting pressure on the backfield, though they do still blitz.

Defensive backs in both assignments mainly protect against long plays that develop behind the linebacker level and serve as the last line of defense behind the linebackers.

At its core, the main difference between the two basic defenses is where the fourth rusher is coming from and the philosophy of the defense and what each position's job is are ultimately determined by where that fourth attacker originates on the field.

ETA: I do not understand football but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

3-4 is better against the pass. The SEC is a passing conference these days.
