What year did tailgating become a "thing" at LSU ?

I've been going to games regularly since I was a wee lad in 1973 or 1974, and as a student through the mid to late 80's and I can not answer this question. One year I looked around and there were thousands of tailgaters where previously there had not been.

I can remember as a kid going with my parents and my friends' parents, and we'd wait in the car and hang out as they drove around to pregame house parties in and around South Baton Rouge, before they'd drive over to campus about an hour to 45 minutes before kickoff.
That's literally what people used to to. It's sort of crazy to think about now.

As a student in the mid 80s through the early 90s, I can tell you that during that time the Parade Ground became part of the tailgating area. I remember walking through a completely empty parade ground before games in '84 and meeting people at their tailgates on the west side of the parade grounds in 90-92 (grad school).

A lot of people don't know or don't remember this. Seems like there were always two or three house parties to stop by before the game. Hardy anyone stood around campus all day except by RV's or some isolated group. Then again, you really didn't see the 40 plus crowd hanging out like college students, either, back then. They looked and acted like grown ups were expected to behave, for better for worse.

I remember seeing RV's on the fringes of the Stadium parking lot in the mid-80's. Seems like they were parked there as early as Thursday but had to park way out in the parking lot next to Nicholson so not to take up too much student parking.

Seemed to coincide with downfall of Murphy's.

I remember RV parking in the mid 1970's being between old Alex Box and the Vet School...
South Stadium Parking was at least twice as large as it is today (same thing for West Stadium)
of course the Stadium crowd was only 72K at max and it was a lot easier to get in and out

Pimp I started going about the same time as you and you are right, not much of what we'd consider tailgating today going on in the 70's. We started what I would consider tailgating in the mid 80's when I was in college and there were plenty of others out there doing it as well.
I would say probably early to mid 80's is probably when the evolution to what it is today began.

Me, too, Pimp. Brad Davis grew up in the house behind my grandparents in Hammond and my family received free tickets through his career at LSU. I started ushering games in 1975 through about 1982. Tailgating was starting to get going around the early 1980's. Wasn't big at all but around the mid to late 80's it started to take off. That's what I seem to remember.

We began tailgating behind the dairy along Tower Dr. in about 1984. There were several groups behind the dairy, and across the street under the porch of Virginia Rice Williams Hall, and along S. Stadium. I can't tell you when it began though.

My family tailgated at the Parade Grounds beginning in the mid 70's.

I heard about the pre-game house parties. I can remember my Dad stopping at the Pastime sometimes before game and I've heard the hotel on Nicholson near the interstate would have a big pre-game crowd before games in the 70's.

I think that hotel was the old Prince Murat. If my parents and their friends were going to spend the night for a game. they would stay there. When the Sheraton was built, they transitioned there and would pregame on the 5th floor because the cocktails were free. Hotel offered shuttle service, so no worries about drinking and driving.

Nothing like the amount of people out there today, but several hundred. Most people would go to the Saturday afternoon mass at Christ the King, then head back to the grounds to commence tailgating.

We got season tix in '67, and my dad liked to get to the game a couple hours early so he could have a beer or two, plus you could beat the traffic into the area. We parked in the grass lot just south of the stadium, as our tix were in U11. My brother and I threw the football around, Dad set up the grill, and my mom hung out with my sister. Good times, for sure. I remember hearing the term 'tailgating' for the first time in the mid-70's, I had no idea there was a name for it.

Late '60's- early '70's I remember seeing the Gonzalez folks bulk cooking jambalaya in plantation sugar cookers-- leading to Cajun/Creole offerings that make our tailgating the epicurean acme of College Football Saturdays anywhere.

tailing was huge at least from the mid sixties when I started going to games.
AND, it was much, much MUCH less hassle and FREE!
also, there was a lot of drinking back in my day but I do not recall even one incident of binge drinking. we all actually went to the game after the tailgate and didn't pass out nor be near death from alcohol poisoning. I actually credit much of that to the 18 yr. drinking age and parents being ok with some drinking at home prior to turning 18 so it wasn't like drinking was so "cool".

I graduated in fall of 72 and we didn't tailgate then to ny extent. Anyone living off campus usually had huge parties and we would walk to the game if near enough. First tailgate I went to was around mid 80s or so. My cousin Lived in BR and my oldest son and I went to their house then to a place they staked out. Played football and ate and drank a few cold ones. It was nothing like what it is now, but still a ton of fun.
