Who on the 2003 team wasn't recruited by Saban? It would have to be a 5th year Sr and clearly all the best players on that team were Saban signees.

Average? Average
We take out 2003 and, nationally, average would be about right. Almost four defeats a year and a winning average of 70%. What would you call it?

2004, he lost 3, but 1 was the blow game on a hail Mary
In 2004 he also won a game he should have lost to Oregon State after their kicker missed 3 extra points. So all in all, 3 losses should/could have been 4 losses.

Come on. The poster said something like, take out 2003 and Saban's record at LSU was average. Now, I would say that nationally his record without 2003 would be a little above average, but calling it average isn't some terrible comment record wise.
The LSU winning percentage from 1989-1994 was 38%. The LSU winning percentage from 1995-1997 was 74%. Saban didn't change the tide of LSU football all by himself. Saban was a very good football coach at LSU with a great year.
The goat at LSU is Les. More top ten finishes, more ten win seasons, more consecutive ten win seasons, more national championship games, and the highest winning percentage.

Don't run options to the short side of the field.

Saban had a better win pct vs SEC teams vs top 10 teams vs top 5 teams vs top 3 teams Miles had a better win pct vs teams ranked 15 to 25 and vs non ranked teams. He also had his win pct boosted from playing an extra rent a win game per season and the SEC west being the weakest it's ever been his first 5 seasons and the fact that he inherited a team with 30+ pro ball players 1 year removed from a national title. Saban inherited a 3 win team with 11 pro players yet still won SEC and National titles at more than twice the rate. Anyone who can't see the difference there doesn't want too and there's literally nobody outside of delusional LSU fans butt hurt because Saban left who would put Les Miles within 50 spots near Nick Saban in any coaching convo.

quote:If I remember that correctly, wasn't the kicker an All American candidate coming into the year? That was a flukish game all the way across the board, Saban genius or no.

Richt and Georgia also skullfricked that 2004 team.

Nah, Serna was a walk-on playing in his first college game. He did end up winning the Groza award and being an All-American the following year though.

It was a monsoon the field was literally a mud pit that's why he couldn't kick. It was no fluke it was bad weather.
