Smoke is a great baseball guy. Very knowledgeable, a great evaluator of talent (was a scout for the Braves last I heard), and an excellent teacher.

Some guys just aren’t cut out to run a major program. Smoke is one of those guys.

You mean all the way back in 2002 before the internet, YouTube and WikiPedia existed to look up answers to questions like these?

there's a handful of guys in coaching history (any sport) who can follow the GOAT and have immediate success. Smoke had 2 issues:

1. He was in the shadow of Skip with Skip looking over his shoulder.
2. Probably the type of guy who was gonna need 8-10 years to get over the hump.

He wasn't nearly as bad as people think he was, even the last year. He just wasn't Skip.

I’ll say this: if you talk to any of those guys that played on Skip’s early teams and say something bad about Smoke? Those are fighting words. They WILL be ready to fight you. They loved him. Will defend him with everything they have.

Sure, he was a good assistant coach... awful head coach.

That's it. I'm not opposed to black or even dark gray, but just use it sparingly amd in the same format as the current uniforms.

The Black & Purple hats were certainly a choice.. not one
we started wearing those in 1999 under Skip. I don’t know why people always attribute that choice to Smoke

The 2003 team was absolutely stacked and might have won it all with a healthy Lane Mestepay.

Surprised Lester Earl hasn't weighed in on this. That kid defended Smoke until the very end.

Lazy recruiting

I seem to remember he’d lose all his best recruits to the draft. Like he didn’t factor that into his recruiting classes.

But I wasn’t too in touch with baseball recruiting back then.
