Why’d I get downvoted saying Matt House?

Can't speak for why someone or one's downvoted you Draco.

It was obvious after the bowl game House's last game that the players did not respect him and that was a problem. But the talent level was just as big or more of a problem. We should never have that poor a level of talent on defense at LSU.

There are many and varied reasons, some I think beyond Kelly's control and some not....but ultimately he's the head coach so he is responsible. I think that has been rectified, now let's see if we can get that talent to play together and play to it's potential.

The DE are unblocked on a QB zone read play. The QB makes his decision to give or keep the ball based on the DE's commitment to the RB or the QB. Unfortunately, our DE's consistently committed to the RB. This mistake gives the QB a free run around the end and then it's left up to poor tackling safeties to make the stop farther down field.

Yes our safety play was horrendous. But it all starts with the unblocked DE on the zone read play.

If the DE stays with the QB, they would either hand the ball off or get TFL every time.

Don’t forget that we were 100% going to lose to South Carolina had Sellers not gotten hurt.

I was shocked by how bad our safeties were at play recognition. They would come up and fill a gap and the QB would run through another gap 10 ft away.

The WHOLE defense lacked Gap Integrity resulting in huge gains by a running quarterback. Hell, we couldn't even set the edge correctly on defense. It's like they were never taught to CONTAIN.

Agree with you and others. I struggled understanding why we could never teach Savion Jones to set the edge. Run defense was bad on all 3 levels of our D.

Personnel wasn’t up to LSU standards. Kirk told anyone who had ears to hear as much in the game against the gumps.

DEs are the most important guys to stop running QBs. While both our ends last year were good pass rushers. Neither of them were great against the run.

Burns, Gilbert and Ryan were bad safeties in run support....which causes big plays to happen there if they cant make the play

Run defense PFF grades from our safety group last season:

Ryan: 51.7
Gilbert: 51.9
Burns: 55.3

Ryan and Gilbert especially poor here. Burns a below average run defender

Just for comparison:

Spears: 81.4 (highest on team of ANY position)
Toviano: 71.5
Allen: 68.3

The wrong safeties were playing last year in terms of best run support. We didnt lean on the younger guys enough.

Unfortunately we weren't good enough to play man on the corners when we needed to. Baker also had zero trust in his safeties' pass coverage abilities. That means a soft zone and a nickel or dime package because you are scared to give up a deep ball. either way you have more DB's on the field playing far off the LOS. This backs up the entire defense and you try to keep the play in front of you. The QB's that wrecked us were guys that aren't easy to tackle in open space...and they had A TON of open space. You pick your poison. My biggest concern is after you give up 150 yds rushing to a QB you have to adjust and we didn't. We will find out if that's a flaw in Baker's philosophy this season because we have plenty of talent.
