What to do with Chris Hilton this week?

Hilton being out has hurt us way worse than I thought. Not just because he can take the top off the defense as our biggest deep threat. But because it moved Daniels outside, when he and Nuss had developed great chemistry with out of the slot. We miss Hilton’s direct production, but moving guys around has hurt our offense in other ways.
Anderson has been nice in the slot, but Daniels provides more mismatches. He’s gonna be better than just his production these 1st 2 games. And he’s more physical and a better blocker than the smaller Anderson. (We’ve got to get Zay Thomas more involved in the offense, too. He’s a dude).
But Hilton’s greatest trait is his speed, and his injury to his foot/ankle could not be in a worse place. It’s something that could linger. Do we run him out there against South Carolina because it’s a must win? Even though it may set him back? Or do we gamble and sit him out? If we win without him, we can hold him out until Ole Miss and give him the best chance of being 100% not only for that game, but the rest of the season. I think playing him against SC definitely sets him back just based on the unfortunate place of where his injury is. Maybe he gets through that game, then sits against South Alabam, UCLA, then the bye week before Ole Miss. Or maybe it sets him back further. I’m just not sure what the better gamble is.

No doubt. But my question is what is the biggest gamble, to play him or sit him?

Has Hilton made a big catch for us?
The only memorable play from him was dropping the ole miss last second TD and then being hurt.
I get he is a supposed deep threat but he has never been available for us.

He never plays and is always hurt. You cannot count on him. Thats about all we know.

You don’t remember very well
Hilton is a stud. If he can’t shake injuries it will limit him, but if he does he is at least a WR 2 in the NFL.

I don’t get this either.
Is Hilton really fast? Yes. Is he our best 3rd WR? maybe yes.
But Zavion Thomas and Aaron Anderson are both fast AF and probably as good as WRs as Hilton anyway. If we were going to use someone to take the top off the defense, it would have been done already.
(I do think Hilton is maybe marginally better in that role fwiw just because familiarity of being in that role and at LSU, but if the coaching staff hasn’t tried with Anderson or Zavion because Hilton’s out then I don’t understand. Those guys are equal talent to Hilton in all aspects)

WR2 in the NFL?!?!?!
Ive seen some crazy pumping on here but that might be up there.
Hilton has something stupid like 23 catches in his 3 year career at LSU.

It’s not about Hilton himself, Les. It’s about the shuffling we’ve had to do with him out. Wouldn’t matter much if Sampson was actually a dude and was ready to play on the outside.
Even if Hilton just sprinted go routes and never caught a ball. As long as somebody’s following him, it opens up the middle more. And gets Daniels and Lacy better matchups in the slot. It’s not that I think Hilton’s a stud, I just think his presence allows for better matchups for our other guys. But even if Hilton doesn’t play a snap all year, Daniels and Thomas need to get more involved.

Zavion barely playing any snaps. Why can’t he run the go routes with Daniels/Anderson in the slot.
Zavion is just as fast as Hilton.

It seemed plausible that Hilton being out had a lot to do with throwing underneath too much vs. USC. You draw up all the deep routes for that guy and then he gets hurt last minute. That needs to be fixed next game. We have other fast guys.

They have other fast guys that can run deep. If there are issues, it’s personnel & play calling. Not because they are missing Hilton

To me. He is a poor mans Jarvis Landry. We need him on the field

It’s not even close. Zavion runs in the upper 21’s and Hilton runs 23.8 mph

Which is kinda weird. He had like 500 yards receiving at MSU last year and they had one of the worst passing offenses in the SEC. I think they’ll work him in more and more.

He can, but he’s better than just that. He needs to get the ball closer to the line of scrimmage and make dudes miss. That’s what he does best. And he’s sneaky strong and can break tackles. He’s kinda wasted just running go routes. He needs more touches on jet sweeps, tunnel screens, slants, etc…He can be used some like Les (and me) wants to use Berry.

This is crazy. Hilton is talented but he is nowhere near being a poor mans Jarvis. They aren’t even really similar players for you to be saying that even.

Hilton ended the year good last year.
He had a huge bowl game & stepped up after Malik came out.
I have hopes for him, I hope he is 100%
