I know pages have been written about our atrocious safety play this year, but I have to add something and also ask a question.

I watched a portion of film breakdown and saw the play along the sidelines in which a deep Lagway pass beat Woodland on the sideline. First quarter, I’m pretty sure.

Afterwards, you could see coach Raymond in Woodland’s ear. Now it’s true Woodland did get about a step late on the break to defend the receiver…

But if you notice Gilbert is reclining in a lawn chair on the 36 and is about five seconds late on his break to help Woodland. For the life of me, I can’t imagine what he does to stay in the game given what we’ve seen.

He can’t help the corners on deep balls, is routinely late. He bounces off tackles like he’s 100 pounds soaking wet. What other responsibilities does he have out there? He can’t tackle, can’t assist in coverage.

I can only imagine a bit of politics is keeping him on the field, and if that’s true, it’s a travesty. We got him as a transfer and feel like due to nil, I suppose, and his transfer status he must be playing…

Doesn’t it seem like he’s getting a pass as the last line of defense… slow to help the corner, who cares? The corner should have played it better. Missed a tackle, oh well, someone else who missed the tackle first is in even hotter water.

I remember we always played Ronald Martin, who I never was a fan of, but this is no comparison. Is Gilbert’s position the easiest in football — with comparatively lackluster expectations?

That makes it, at least to me, even more stunning that his watered down position on the team can’t find a replacement?

This leads me back to the idea that it’s his status as a transfer (and Ryan’s decision to stay) that have them in a special situation destined to see the field no matter how many times what they actually do on the field suggests otherwise.

Seems like that’s how we get where we are. Apologies for the book; also apologies to beat a dead horse

Safety is the hardest position to play on defense in modern college football.

Unless BK just completely whiffed on the younger guys from last years class, I have to think they just don't know the plays, especially the freshmen. I think that's why they keep throwing sage out there as the greendot.

No he's not the best player, but he's been here and knows what to do. We just gotta have people that know what to do, and then can actually do it.

It's not politics keeping him on the field. It's they have nobody else that's better. I'm not impressed with the coaching here but I'll give the S coach a pass since these guys were never good under any coach. Gilbert wasn't good at TAMU and Burns/Sage have never been good.

They're simply working with what they're dealt. The young freshman S show potential but they also blow assignments. until that's resolved, they won't start over anyone because you can't have a safety blow cover for free TDs. As bad as our S are at least they can stand in front of someone to be an obstacle. It would look worse with freshman who don't know what they're doing.

This S group is the worst I've ever seen at LSU and it's not even close.

Gilbert might bruise his arms if he used them.

Better to try and generally collide with the ball carrier and hope he loses balance

As far as Corey's convo with him afterwards, I'm sure it was something to the effect that you gotta do better than that b/c you damn well know the safety isn't going to help you

I agree wholeheartedly and I feel the same way about Stamps. Having those two on the field at the same time is like playing with only 9 potential tacklers.

No dought and this is the slowest D that I can remember and I said that last yr. Pretty much ignored the D last yr. And I think we were going to rely on outscoring people.

My biggest problem is that the young freshman out there will at least be getting them ready for next year. 0 reason to play the upperclassmen in the last two games. ZERO

And even with all of his short comings, he is still better than Sage Ryan. He at least gives it his full effort and plays hard. Something Sage does not do.

They tried Spears early in the season, but he was utterly lost. I'm guessing they'd rather have poor tackling and bad angles than completely blown coverages.

LSU safety play is hard to watch. It's damaging to the brand.

And that wasn't even his worst offense in defending the pass on Saturday. On Florida's late long pass to the one, Gilbert sees the ball in the air, keeps floating back, and lets the WR cut in front of him to make the play. LSU calls the perfect defense for that exact route, and instead of it being picked off, it results in a huge game-breaking play.

This! I would absolutely lose my shite on Gilbert if I was a coach. I have never seen the guy wrap up - it is incredible.

It would be interesting to see Spears, Jackson and Toviano out there just for the sake of comparison. Of course, they see them in practice and, I suppose, have made a decision on things. That’s a touch scary.

I know someone said Jackson had been at times difficult to coach (in high school, if I recall correctly) and Spears was once on the IL (maybe three weeks ago). Maybe there are off-the-field considerations holding them back…

Toviano for his part has played though not as much as many hoped. I look forward to him getting more time even though I think Burns has at times been serviceable—provided he’s near the line of scrimmage and not in coverage.

The games against Vanderbilt and OU should be interesting—we’re still playing for something but it ain’t what we want…

As of now, keep the incoming class together, which is imperative, and my original post will hopefully disintegrate into the large dustbin of forgettable history.

Martin wasn’t bad, but he would definitely look like prime Ronnie Lott on this defense compared to the other safeties.

our starters are already giving up free TDs though. Only way for them to learn is to get their feet wet. Would rather throw them out there let them take their licks then show them the film and try to correct it. Get your most talented guys on the field these last 2 games. Gilbert has no business starting anymore.

He’s afraid to tackle and never runs toward the ball carrier.

Martin saw snaps as a freshman in what was probably the best lsu secondary ever (TM7, Reid, Claiborne, brooks, etc)

Nobody in this current secondary would have even come close to playing on that 2011 team

Burns , Sage and Gilbert are useless as safeties It's scary to think that's the best we have to be starting at those positions. None can cover and when it comes to flying up to make a hit, ( Its laughable.) They are soooo scared to hit anyone., They try to side tackle or grab a shoulder , or jump way behind and grab the feet.

Play the dammmm Freshman!!! . .

Honestly, the only viable player in the secondary that starts is Alexander and the rest are just serviceable.
