Johnson was able to recruit the Lopez Twins from Fresno AND Miles Plumlee(who was released from his commitment after Johnson left for LSU)!!

He played inside-out offense so he needed bigs that could rebound, play defense and be at least serviceable on the block..

As others have said he had a disdain for the AAU fixers and though very qualified to coach LSU didn't fit long-term as he did turning Nevada around & winning 60% of ALL his games at Stanford!!

You dudes constantly rehash untruths !!

That's what is so confusing. He got dirty to sign O'bryant, GUARANTEED. But nobody else apparently.

For the record, and I've said it a long time ago on here - I liked the TJ hire. I thought he was going to do well for us.

The CJJ hire I thought was lazy, even though I don't dislike Johnny at all.

I liked the hire too. The team he took over in 2008 was the same one Brady had been fired for starting 2-8 in SEC play minus Anthony Randolph. Johnson won the SEC with them. It wasn’t a X’s and O’s problem.

AAU sh**! Is out of control!! Teaching is minimal and the Coaching antics would lead you to believe that HOFers are roaming the sidelines!! Team basketball isn't taught even if they would say otherwise!! The games are showcases for the next level for players and showcases for pay increases for those in power!! Its for delusional parents, talented but fundamentally weak players and greedy AAU coaches and middle men!!! They don't teach at all but inflating kids'egos by having them travel the country showing up for games and rolling the ball out as if they are college and pro athletes is ridiculous!! Many former players with kids despise AAU ball and won't allow their kids to participate!! Many coaches on all levels have grown to hate the circuit in the last 25+ years because it wasn't always this way!! Greats like Kobe Bryant spoke out against it while he was still in the league!!! Successful NCAA teams recruit AAU but those programs were paying players well before the AAU model evolved to its current state a few decades or more ago!!

Hanny or Ott used to always say that Johnson didn’t use all of his scholarships one season. WTF?!? You mean to tell me you can’t find a guy that’s better than nothing?

Thanks to everyone for responding. There are some good insights in this thread.

Other than the awesome first season, my most lasting memory of the Trent Johnson era is Andre Stringer launching 3s from about 35 feet. And Del Piero, of course.

This is true, and three of the scholarships were used on Chris Bass, Garrett Green, and Eddie Ludwig. Chris Beattie and Zach Kinsley actually fricking started for us. Dark times.

That was Dale and Collis, finally getting some influence. Thankfully it blew up spectacularly and their influence waned to the point they couldn’t keep Gunter’s name off the court.

McMahon and Johnson have something in common, they are both bad recruiters and have no personality. Opposite of those two is Will Wade, he is an excellent recruiter, has plenty of personality and as an added bonus he built excitement into the program not seen since John Brady was at LSU.

Too much was asked of his first full class too early on. Guys like Stringer, Turner and Matt D. never got a chance to develop properly. That tilt from Brady’s vets to a bunch of kids was wild. Probably should’ve brought in a couple JUCOs but that wasn’t really his MO although he did he start recruiting Shavon Coleman.

Transferred in during the final four year mid semester and had to sit til December 06.

Dameon Mason was also sitting out on that final 4 team after transferring. Our fans thought DWade 2.0 was coming.

By the time Johnson left we had a roster full of guys that couldn’t make other SEC teams much less start. I also think he was a decent X and O guy. But he was the worst recruiter/roster builder we have had in any sport I think.
