Players in LSU uniforms casually trotting around the bases as players in other uniforms awkwardly watch, trying not to look too dejected.

Not necessarily completely Jay related but here's what I'm looking for:

Leadership - the team has kinda lacked leadership. Crews, Morgan, and Doughty (and several others) are quiet leaders. Dugas showed some flashes. Not sure how Berry operates. Will any pitchers step into a leadership role? I want to see a team that will stick their chest out.

Pitching moves - I mean this from pitching changes to pitch calling and everything in between. How will we manage this staff?

Defense - by all accounts, we should hit and we have plenty of arms. How will our defense hold things together? You can't get through the conference with shoddy defense, no matter how good you hit and especially with so many unknowns on the mound.

Plate discipline - a good offense puts pressure on pitchers by not helping them. Sure, raking helps but it's the in between grind that takes offenses to the next level.

Bat control - even if we rake, we'll still need to execute in moving runners, whether that's by sac bunts/flies or hitting behind runners

Bench contributions - 6 or so spots in the starting lineup are pretty set, but we'll need guys to step up when called upon. If Jay uses a platoon in the open spots early, which guys will make it hard for him not to start? Will we have a tried and true bat or 2 to pinch hit against lefties or just for Milazzo in general?

1) Smart batting. Work the pitcher. If he just walked the last two batters don’t go first pitch swinging. If you pitcher just had a long inning in the heat, take longer counts to give him time to rest.

2) smart base running. Paul was notorious for running us out of a big inning.

A better plate approach
The greatest irony of the Mainieri era was the rant constantly complaining about hitting, while simultaneously proposing, at times even cheering for, the same approach that Mainieri believed in and was the root cause of most of the problems.

That pretty much covers it.

More consistent hitting, especially with base runners. And, more importantly, a willingness to spread the wealth with pitching. Do NOT let guys dig a deep hole before relief. Meaning more depth.

I just want to see a coach who doesn't leave a struggling pitcher in too long or take one out whose on fire too early.

Not that I want our pitchers to struggle, but if they do, I want to see our pitching coach go to the mound & visit him. I have read that this is allowed 1 time per inning without having to replace the pitcher.

I would also like to see guys in the bullpen, warming up late in games.

No more coaching staffs filled with former players
This is LSU, coaching hires should be made on credentials not bbq buddies
I also see no student assistants, I guess that has been shelved as well

Bunting and moving batters up, and a competent 3rd vase coach are things mentioned a lot in threads…..

what i am interested in will not fully unfold in one game. it will take a week, or more.

1-how the pitching staff is managed. some will step up, others will take some lumps. how are innings split, and short of a rope are pitchers on.

2-plate approach and discipline. as coach JJ says, "...punish mistakes".

I upvoted every response before me, so you all are spot on. I believe a better approach to the plate is coming.

So, my answer to the specific "anxious" point is I want to see the development and improvement in our pitching staff and how the coaches manage our pitching staff in relation to minimizing pitcher injuries.
