You think he was better in 2011 Lester?

threw 50.1 innings in 09'
threw 27.2 innings in 11'

b/avg .237 in 09'
b/avg .229 in 11'

69 SO's 6 BB's in 09'
27 SO's 7 BB's in 11'

Pitching to 85 more batters in 09 I would think the law of averages would favor the hitters.

FWIW, he's at low-A Greenville in the Red Sox organization. Had one rough outing early in the season. Since then, he's settled down. Pitched two innings tonite. No hits, 3 Ks. He's one of 3 Louisiana kids on the Drive.

My view is that he was an absolutely essential part of our run to a national championship. He will always have a place in LSU history for me because of that. Everything after that means nothing to me.

He was a stud who got into a slump. I will always love Matty for that freshman year.

THIS

Sorry but if you are great, you are ALWAYS at least good. You don't drop off like he did in one year. He has the skills but something happened to him in 2010 and that proved he was just mediocre as a closer. He was destroyed against Florida in his first career start and never recovered.

What do yall think Ott's role would be this year if he came back? It's hard to imagine him having a better year than Goody.

I never said he was better. But outside of 2-3 appearances he was really good. And the numbers reflect that.

The law of averages also say that if you don't pitch many innings and you get lit up, your numbers inflate dramatically. In his case he was still able to keep them down. Shows that he was more good than bad. Blown saves just stand out, like someone said. Plus he had a lot less safe chances in 2011 as a whole.

Coaching is what happened to Matty. He was doing fine until he threw those 7 innings in relief against Bama. PM then decided to try to make him something he's not by starting him. He never recovered.

You also have to consider 2011 Matt Ott faced dead bats compared to 09 Matty Ott.

To me he went from

incredible to bad to decent.......of course 09 overshadows it all....but he wasn't near as dominant in 11, hitters started laying off those sliders....he blew too many saves after 09.

Ott is a Mainieri poor decision. Mainieri started him against UF in 2010 and he was never the same after that.

2010 Florida -- ruined him.

He leaves no legacy. He was good as a freshman.

In 2011, he blew the Florida Fri Night and Miss State Fri night games. That kept us from Hoover and a regional. Next.

All I can remember is that heart breaking blown save vs #1 Florida the night PP7 and Matt Flynn were honored at the box. Such a brutal loss.

In 2009 I never seen a pitcher do more than him with one pitch.

But then SEC teams figured out he had but one pitch and he was less effective.
