What is the legacy of Matty Ott?
National championship winning closer who holds LSU's all-time saves record.

I will remember all the stories of a gf getting in his head after they broke up. Don't know how true, but it was on the rant and stated by quite a few

2010 was horrendous.
Yep. I went from chalking up a win everytime he came in for the 2009 season, to dreading his entry in 2010. I don't think I've ever seen such polar-opposite, consecutive years in an LSU pitcher.

Pure badass his freshman year. Sucked after that.

so how is Ott remembered?
Having a remarkable freshman season and helping LSU win a national championship in 2009.
2010 and 2011, everyone and their mother had figured him out...he wasn't fooling anybody.

his batting average against was lower in 2011 than it was in 2009.

I think there was an injury and a surgery somewhere in there. Ott was a freaking beast of a closer. He struggled in the middle of his career but I can't ever, and I mean EVER remember anyone at LSU who could close a game like he did in 09.

Ott had one good year. After that, the team around him sucked and he couldnt be as effective. He wasnt even used the same completely. Even as good as he was for one year, he isnt in the top 20 best pitchers ever at LSU. People who dont remember the 90s will disagree, but they are young and dont matter anyway.

2011 he had a lower ERA and hitters hit for a lower average against him than they did in his super 2009 season.
just for comparisons sake:
2011
2.60 ERA
.229 AVG against
8.9 K:9
2009
2.68 ERA
.237 AVG against
8.2 K:9

I dont remember him ever having a surgery.
I think the justin vincent of baseball is pretty accurate.

The perception is he was bad in 2011 because of blown saves against Florida and Mississippi State and when he got pounded against ULL.
And he lost his job for a while which means he pitched in lower pressure situations.

Matty Ice was a big piece of the 09 NC puzzle. When he came in the game, you just had that felling we were going to win. Those are some awesome memories.

He never lost his job. LSU didn't have many save opportunities last year.
between the ULL debacle (which wasnt even a save situation) and the MSU game in the last series, he was great.
Between those games LSU had 4 save opportunities. Ott had 3, Berry got 1.
After ULL, Ott threw 17 IP, only giving up 3 ER. 15K's. saved 2 of 3 games, blown save coming vs MSU 2nd to last game.

He lost his job around the Arkansas series which led to Berry's own debacle on that Saturday.
Posted on 5/3/12 at 6:04 pm to The Boat
He got a save the next weekend vs Auburn after the ARK series.
Berry's save came on a 2 inning outing. He was basically just left in the game after the 8th to close. Then he blew the ARK game.

Nah man Gausman went 8. Berry was so bad Mainieri had no choice but to go back to Ott.

this is the timeline i see:
may 18th Ott gets save opp vs FL and blows it
LSU doesn't have another save opp until Apr 1st. Eades starts the 8th with LSU up 7-3. Eades doesnt record an out and Berry enters in the 8th. Then pitches the 9th to record the save.
the next save opp doesnt come until Apr 9th vs ARK. Berry gets shelled after Gausman goes 8. He never gets a another shot after this.
dont know. not sure i constitute that as losing your job. Essentially got 1 official save chance after Ott had blown game vs CSF then FL in back to back weekends

A jewel in our miraculous run to the '09 NC.
Without him, we do not win it...........

An appreciation for the huge role in 09, but I think of the meatballs first.
