nap, supposedly, the excuse has always been that it is impossible to grow good grass that close to the river on the flood plain .. i am not a turf guy, so i dunno if that is true or not, but the old box always looked like shite too ..

I know this area was covered up before the opening games.

If it is really green right now, I am sure they over-seeded with a cool season grass most likely ryegrass. LSU didn't do that because it is new turf and when it did come out of dormancy it would be competing with the ryegrass which would hinder the growth.

Yes they cover that area when taking BP to avoid being torn up by the balls.

it just seems if you are going to have a beautiful new ballpark, why not have a beautiful field ?? i want the nice high/low "45" cut that you see at a big league ballpark with a big "L" cut into center field ... for the money i am plunking down for season tix ..

Whatever the reasons for the turf problem, it is inexcusable. We pay LSU athletics entirely too much money for crappy turf in Tiger Stadium and now The Box.

It kills me how they can spend all this money, but seemingly skimp on the turf management.

UNO and ULL dont have this issue. Shouldnt their grass be dormant too? Or is it just dormant for new grass? In thats case South Carolina that has had much colder weather than us looks amazing with their new grass.

1) They DO have a new turf manager.
2) The Bermuda was sodded at the wrong time of year. When a section of sod is put back in the ground, the first week is critical. It must root in and continue to grow. This is NOT the time of year for that to happen with 100% effieciency. Ask yourself this....How many times have you cut your lawn since November? Not much growth.
3) Just like your yard, the growth will come. It still needs time to mature, but traffic on a Baseball field is much different than a Football field. It will get better after April 15.
4) I hear this new man is good.

100% agreed. They need to fire whoever runs the gig for that....

Depends on the grass type they chose to put in and when they did it.

Ask yourself this. Didn't they plan for this?

I could buy this excuse if we didn't have turf issues in Tiger Stadium.

We also laid the bermuda in October. Please God tell me the last time you laid sod in late October, and had people running all over it and it was perfectly green and fully matured?

Also, you can't overseed with a wintergrass this soon.

Believe me, I'm not making excuses. I agree, they should have sodded the field last summer, and worked around it. I assume that was not possible, and that heavy equipment was being used in the area, preventing them from laying the field down.

The rye grass should have been planted in October and the bermuda alot earlier. Hopefully they will do it better next year. They normally build the base of dirt with good dirt they bring in. Not sure if they did it for this stadium or just used the native soil.

There's a lot that goes into growing grass than most people realize. If grass seems dead it's because it contaminates with other grass. Normally LSU grass is grown across the river. Then planted on the fields. Sometimes when the grass grows together it becomes contiminated. Those guys work nonstop on the grass so if there's a problem there working on it..

P.S. Toma was down with LSU during Katrina and was very impressed with the job Todd Jeansonne is doing.

i just don't understand why the field at tiger stadium looks like absolute crap after two games for the rest of the season and they have to paint the dirt green for television ... didn't they just do a major irrigation and re-sodding project there a few years back ? i remember back in the day that field looked a helluva lot better than it does now ..

They laid new sod this summer. Killed all the grass because of the problems from 2007.
