What has happened to the offensive line?
Posted by drexyl on 11/15/15 at 3:18 pm140
Grimes is supposed to be a good OL coach and earlier in the year I would have said our talent was decent as well (Pocic, Hawkins, Alexander, Clapp). After the bye week they have just been terrible.

It would appear that Bama picked up on some problems and illustrated to everyone how to take advantage of them.
I went into the bye week thinking we might have the best OL in the SEC. Nope.
I mean their production just fell off the cliff. LF was averaging 7ypc before contact and Harris had barely been sacked all year. Multiple OL were sec lineman of the week. Now they can't bust a grape out there. LF getting hit in the backfield and Harris running for his life.
Was it losing Dillon Gordon? I know he was important but damn. I just don't get it.

Which of these scenarios seems most likely?
1. The offensive linemen decided en masse they didn't like Miles, Grimes, and have quit playing hard.
2. The offensive linemen just weren't that good to begin with.
3. The last 2 opponents were able to predict (i.e., LSU's playcalling was predictable) LSU's playcalls, have "jumped" the plays so to speak, and put more defenders at the right places than the offensive linemen could effectively block.
I submit, #3.

I don't buy it. The plan by every defense has ALWAYS been this.
It just now started working?

Pocic at Center doesn't make sense to me. He is 6'7 and playing out of position.
When you're the 6th best rushing team in the country after 7 games.. it's not an anomaly.
LF averaged 7.94 yards per carry over the first 7 games (without any under 5.8).
He's averaged 3.2 per carry the last two. Neither game within 1 yard/carry of his lowest average ALL season!
LF's worst yard/carry average in the first 7 games was 5.8.
Henry surpassed LF's WORST yards/carry/game only TWICE in the first 7 games. Are they overrated?
Something tangible happened.
It has to be Moore and Gordon.. That's the only explanation.

Losing our FB and best TE is not helpful in the total scheme of things...

Im not sure it's that simple. Go back and watch Alexander on pass plays. he would start moving backwards as soon as the ball was snapped. by the time he engaged the defender he was right next to harris. And since he was moving backward the defender already had an edge when he rushed him. It was like that every play! I've never seen pass blocking like that. Maybe a couple of steps back to cut off an angle but then engage the defender! Same thing was happening with Hawkins. Was Alexander hurt also. Looked like he couldn't put pressure on his right leg.

quote:i noticed that too. I'd be interested in comparing the OL at the start of the season to the shite show we've seen the last two weeks.

If they were that important to that scheme then you have no choice but to change your scheme.

Pocic at OC is unnatural. 63 was over whelmed last night as well in place of Hawkins.
I really think that unit could flourish, but it requires some solid coaching.

He is doing a good job for his size. Everyone knows we don't really have a center and he is playing this position out of need.
Pocic is a fine player but his center of gravity is just too high. Not his fault.
COMPLETELY UNRELATED... Dupree did his job last night.

Started playing better teams

I don't disagree in the least, I'm just asking if that is what the consensus theory on the problem is. FB and TE. Would't we at least try the same scheme with different players (if/when the new scheme isn't working? or did we and it failed?).

This is ridiculous. After 7 games you know your strengths and weaknesses. Bama was/is a great DL, but we should not have been nearly as inneffective (TENN and Georgia were able to run the ball well - MS State wasn't nearly as bad at it as we were).. and Ark isn't a great DL by any means.
The production has nosedived..
