St Aug was state champs Edgerson’s junior year, which was Earl’s senior year. They finished #1 in nation USA Today champs, so not sure what you are talking about as they beat Glenn Oaks.

LSU signed Cory Powell and Lester Earl the same yer. Powell did not qualify academically and went to a junior college.
What has never been clear is why Lester wanted to leave LSU at mid season of his freshman year. The story was that Old Roy Williams got to him while LSU and Kansas were both at a holiday tournament. Was Lester unhappy about his situation at LSU or was he just an easily influenced kid?

Glen oaks first year in 5A was 96’, when they murdered Rummel in the finals, Earl was definitely on that team.
Rummel beat Aug & Edgerson in the semis if my memory serves me right
Aug won 5A the year before. Glen Oaks won 4A
I think Edgerson & Earl were in the same class

I suspect it was because his older brother was getting more playing time than he. He was supposed to be the star and his psyche couldn't handle the truth.
He was vastly over rated.
IMO, we shouldn't hold it against him. He probably had no-one he could depend on for guidance.
Hope he is doing well.

Didn’t realize Powell signed with us I know he went out west somewhere and played well. As far as Earl leaving who knows, we weren’t that good he had a lot on his shoulders and wasn’t producing offensively. Maybe he thought going to a contender and being a role player would be easier for him? I don’t know but from his decisions he seemed like an unsure kid who couldn’t handle pressure.

I’m taking about Glen Oaks vs St. Augustine in the 1996 top 28. You do know they had the semi finals at the top 28 then right? Eugene Edgerson graduated in 96 just like Earl and Glen Oaks knocked them out in the semi finals. Edgerson is #33

The 1995 4A & 5A state championship games had to be the biggest crowd ever in the PMAC. The walkway between the middle and upper level was packed with people as were all of the lower entrances. Really don’t know how the fire marshall didn’t stop letting people in sooner. Probably 18000-20000 people there.
