When up 4 runs in the 8th, it’s more similar to taking a knee on opponents 2 yard line with 4 minutes left.

Legitimate answer? Draw play on 3rd and 12. Sometimes it works

The shift was on so it was more about poor execution.

Down by two on the last play of the game and throwing a fade to the back of the endzone rather than kicking the field goal.

So was he suppose to bunt up the 1st base line? Otherwise it was a pretty good bunt but Neal had NO SHOT at beating the throw to 1st base.

The bigger and more obvious question is why earlier in the game do you pinch hit with Frey and ASK HIM TO BUNT!

No. Not shifted. But not really expecting the bunt. It was a low success percentage play. If, if, if, he got a hit. Well, as is normal with a bunt, it wasn’t placed perfect and it was a relatively easy out……next inning.

Do we even know it was called or if the player thought he had an opportunity?

ONLY thing, maybe he wants to see who can bunt in a pressure situation. Otherwise, I have no clue.

There is not a single skilled bunter on the roster, so it was dumb for that reason.

It equates to running the ball on 3rd and 14 hoping to surprise the defense. It works one in every 20 times

This offhand guess is, incredibly, almost exactly right
quote:

We previously found that teams run the ball on approximately 17% of third-and-long plays. [They define this as 15 yards or more by the way] In 2018, the average rush attempt gained 4.4 yards, so you might guess that running the ball is generally unsuccessful on third-and-long. You would be correct. The first down rate on long-yardage third down rushes is just 5.50% — worse than a screen pass in the same situation.
