I agree that Richt needs a MNC in many people's eyes to cement him as a "top" coach, but don't use a MNC as your only argument. Larry Coker, Lou Holtz and Bobby Ross all have MNCs over the last 20 years, and I would not consider any of them to be "top" coaches.

Like him alot more than the Florida coach.
Disappointed last year with the whinning and also during the SEC championship game when he sent his kicker out at halftime when the Tiger band was still on the field.

most certainly were top coaches when they won the MNC.

I would say that Richt is a top-tier SEC coach that has never gotten it done on the biggest stage. He is 2-1 in the SEC Championship game, which is more than I can say for most SEC coaches.

He consistently has a highly rated team that loses to teams that shouldn't beat them. He has built a very successful program, but has never put it all together in one year.

And he appears to be a whiny bitch.

Concise and eloquent. 'nuff said.

Mark Richt is a . I personally can't stand him and think is a hypocrite. I can't wait to see LSU him all the back to Athens.

Seriously.

MNCs as determinants of coaching performance are ridiculously overrated by many.

He has been coaching in what has been easily the toughest division of the toughest conference in CFB over the course of the decade. Pete Carroll, Jim Tressel, Bob Stoops, Nick Saban (better record against the SECW than SECE), etc. would all have diminished numbers from what they have now given that.

Spurrier would not have his National Title if the BCS had been in place in 1996.

Saban won in 2003 his record was 13-1, in 2002 Richt went 13-1. Had OU and USC gone undefeated in 2003, like Miami and tOSU did in 2002, Saban would be like Richt 13-1 ranked #3.

Things beyond the control of the HC of any team affect the NC, unless you can explain what Saban did in 2003 to make sure there were not 2 undefeated teams?

Good post.

12-1 SECC in 2002. Didn't get to play in the MNC game.

The U and Ohio State both went undefeated that year.

Why the fuch would you degrade such accomplishments by claiming that a man who has won 2 such titles (SEC Champs in 02 and 05) in 7 years hasn't "won anything"?

Because he never took the NEXT step and won the whole enchilada, as have Miles, Meyer, Saban, etc.

At some point you have to have the magical season where it all falls into place like LSU (twice) USC, Texas, Florida etc.

Maybe this is that year.

I think he's a good coach and a good man and some of the premises for the arguments made against him by some folks in this thread are completely fricked up and out of whack.

I think Richt is a great coach and has kept UGA at a very high level of competition. But to compare his early results with Saban, when Richt inherited much better talent from Donnan, is a joke. Look at how many players UGA put in the NFL his first 4 years, the UGA defensive players he had compared to Saban having to play tight ends on the defensive line in 2001 is a joke. How much QB turnover has UGA had in Richt's tenure compared to LSU. Greene-4 year starter, Shockley -1 year, and Stafford going on year 3. I think LSU has started 5 different QB's since 2000 and had starters miss more than half the season.

With that said, Rich has done an outstanding job, sometimes the football has to bounce your way at the end of the season.

What are some examples of this (that couldn't be given for other SEC coaches)?

Someone else has probably said this but I don't have time to read nine pages: Les Miles.
