Same here - I heard a lot of "Help Mac pack" in the stands as a kid. But Mac seemed to be liked by fans and respected by fellow coaches in retirement. Even my dad, after griping about him, would say he was the only coach to beat the Bear back to back years.
I got to meet and chat with Mac once or twice in his later years - we were going through chemo at the same place in '01.

Coach Paul Dietzel!!! The White team, the GoLd (Go) Team, and the Chinese Bandits!

Cholly Mac. Won 70% of his games but fired cause he couldn't beat Bama and Bear Bryant. Pretty much built the aura of Tiger stadium being the toughest place to play in the country. Always out talented by the big boys but always had a stout defense and they always showed up to play for him.

Cholly Mac too. I always liked him. Seemed like a genuinely nice person.

Did your dad just hate everyone? I can't imagine anyone hating Mac.
Well, it wasn't a personal hate, but he just never liked him as a head coach.

My Uncle was unofficial president of the "Help Mac Pack!" Club. Even back in the 70's Tiger Fans butched over not being able to beat Bama and win the SEC.

Jerry Stovall. Lived on South Lakeshore drive next to house for LSU president. Use to walk around the lake on game day to go buy tickets for $5. Lots of empty seats back then. I do remember watch the orange game under Bill Arnsbarger. Didn't he leave LSU to go be Florida AD.

I think time has been kind to Mac, and as I indicated as a kid I liked him he was my coach. But in his last 6 years he only beat one team that finished the season with ranked in the top 20.
I don't think he was ever a great recruiter, early in his tenure the AD Corbett and John McKeithen helped a lot with recruiting, it was a different time. When Corbett died and McKeithen left office and integration changed the landscape, Mac did not quite keep up. He was still a good coach, but he didn't have the players the better teams did.
