They still contended for a title in my book. By your logic none of the other 3 teams in the 2019 playoff contended for a title either.

Um Brian Kelly disagrees.

Problem is - by the time we get to know him, he'll be retirement age. The floor is high, but the ceiling isn't quite as high as some might think.

This was far from being a long-term homerun. This was a safe triple. Maybe what we need right now, but if the goal is to get to and win the playoffs, consistently, not sure if Kelly is "the" guy.

No question he did a great job at making Cincinnati a mid-major powerhouse and won consistently at Notre Dame. None of that changes the fact he's already 60.

He has kept Notre Dame respectable but certainly not contenders for a 'ship

They went to a BCS Championship, 2 playoff appearances, 2017 was close but dropped 2 games at end of season, and now they are close again. That is the definition of being a contender. Doesn't mean they would win, but Brian Kelly's teams have definitely been contenders.

It’s up to us, the fans to prevent that from happening. What exactly should our expectations be?

I’d say this is fair:
22/23 - Rebuild roster, +.500 in the SEC
23/24 - contention for SECW champion, NY6 Bowl
24/25 and beyond annual contender for SECC and Playoffs. That doesn’t mean we have to get there each year, but we should be in that conversation most years.

I'm pretty sure an expanded playoff is coming, which is an extra reason Texas and OU are coming to the SEC. So, it will probably be easier to get into playoffs soon as long as you are a top 8-12 team depending on the route of the committee.

Next year will be year 3 with a depleted roster under the 85 limit.
Ogre left a cesspool to clean up.

You are wrong. Someone really worth his salt decided to go up against the best coaches in the SEC. Coach Kelly has a great resume and clearly has been a contender for the national title recently. Also, he is a program builder and maintainer.

Fair but it will be interesting to see how quickly he can get LSU back to where we were in 2019. Not that I expect it to be at that same level, but Definitely not in year one or year two of his tenure. I’m excited and I wasn’t excited when CEO was named coach but I got on board pretty quickly because he was a likeable guy in my opinion.

Yup. They're supposed to vote on a 12-team playoff soon. I factored that into my thought process

I don't see this team being flat-out embarrassed with BK at the helm. We may lose more than we want next year but we'll compete. We're not going to get run by UK I'll tell you that much.

No other teams certainly had Teams that had a realistic chance to win it all, ND did not have a team that was going to win it all. They just did not have enough horse power to contend---they just could never score enough it is what it is. Proof is in the outcome of their feeble attempts.

I’m all in. I am with him just like I was with Coach O. Respect is earned. He will have to earn that respect from Tiger fans. Getting on board with him is the easy part! I believe he will be a great hire and I am praying for his success.

Nobody thought OSU had a realistic chance of beating Bama or Oregon in the 1st CFP w/a 3rd string QB either but they did. Same goes for Clemson beating Bama in the 2019 CFP 45-16!

You cant win it all if you don’t get there & if ur there you definitely have a realistic chance of winning it all

This is absolutely the way, but also impossible, since you can only ever start the starter. If Kelley can solve this conundrum, the stadium will bear his name before he retires.

they did make it just look at the results lol

I am all in on Kelly but he didn't have ND with a realistic chance of a "ship.
