Jake Mangum Makes Please for Improvements to College Baseball

The SEC needs to keep this on the front line until a change is made.

That was a pretty strong message. I am glad he spoke up. Let's hope the powers that be do something.

Well said.

Also, he made an incredible throw from center to almost throw out the tying run last night. Hell of a player, and glad we don’t have to face him anymore.

He was a walk-on the last two seasons?

Could you see this happening in another sport? Do you see an all-american football or basketball player saying, naw, let someone have my scholarship?

Very impressive.

“In this dugout, on that field, there were 27 players on each team. You start off with 35, you come (to Omaha) with 27. Of those 35, there’s 11.7 on each team on scholarship. Like, man, this game is getting way too big for that.

The Femanazis who constantly push for a complete f*cking obscene and absurd reading of Title IX will never allow that to happen.

While the girls softball teams get 12, any comparison of the two sports is misleading. Most softball teams use 2, maybe 3 pitchers. Softball pitchers can pitch almost an unlimited number of pitches over several days. Each baseball team needs at least 10 pitchers.

Good point. Todd Walker was a walk-on at LSU and he won College Player of the Year. Kramer Robertson was also technically a walk-on at LSU. It does happen a lot in baseball, but never in football or basketball (that I know of).

imagine the kid of talent and level of play there would be in college baseball if there were more paid assistants and full scholarships

Blame title IX for the lack of scholarships.

It doesn’t work that way in football. First, because the ratio of scholarships to roster spots in football is sane, and second because the rules are designed to make sure anyone who is good at football “counts” as a scholarship player even if they aren’t on scholarship, so there is not much benefit to having a good player decline a scholarship (or take a scholarship in a different sport instead).

But it’s a really poor argument. College baseball doesn’t fund itself in 90% if the cases as is. Raising the cost will obviously makes that worse.

The real argument is a Title IX one. But instead, he chose to act like a victim as if baseball players were getting taken advantage of like football players.

Individually, I agree. But, that's not what I was referencing, and it's not what Mangum is referencing either.

Football PROGRAMS (along with basketball to a lesser extent) fund all other athletic programs. He's making the case that baseball deserves more.

He's right if you compare it to other non-revenue sports (all title IX). He's wrong otherwise. The attendance doesn't support it. The revenue doesn't support it. The television money doesn't support it.

I want what he wants. But, his argument is poor.
