Definitely a legit consideration. It's very tempting to take the money right away, but staying another year could be worth it in the long run.

Football players have a limited shelf life. One more year in college basically means one less year in the NFL. With the league minimum salary being about $500k (and assuming the same draft status after an additional year in college), you have to ask yourself whether staying in school to try to play for an SEC and National Championship is worth a half million dollars (or more, for more highly drafted players).

Most (all?) people would say no.

You're probably wrong about Jennings not getting much better, and you're definitely wrong about Harris not getting a chance. I can tell you probably didn't watch any of the games this year, but Miles actually gave Harris a great shot THIS year. It was against Auburn. I expect this will be a shock to you, but Harris actually started the game.

The thing is, almost all could really improve their draft stock with another year.

Hunter needs to show ANY kind of pass rushing skills

Hawkins can make big money by moving to the "money spot" on the OL next year.

Vadal can solidify himself as the top guard next year (first round money is better than second round money).

Dural can show that he is more than just a speed receiver. While not Cooper, I could see him explode next year with better route running, and better QB play.

Kwon, I just want him to play another year I could see 5th round this year, and maybe higher next year, if he can become a tackling machine, and a cause more turnovers.

I'm with you 100% until here....if Travin even gets a sniff that he will be drafted he should go. To try and convince this kid that our QB situation will get better because it can't get any worse is an insult to his intelligence. He needs to move on so that he can get more frequent and multitudes better opportunities.

He needs to get better at route running. He can leave, but he should try to improve his stock to more than a possible 5th rounder.

Also Harris will start next year. That is about as factual as Jennings continuing to start next year. We don't know. All I really know, is that the best guy will start. I think the best guy will be Harris.

Makes me wonder how old the OP is.

I hope you wondered the same for the people that think Harris will never start while Jennings is here just because terrible Lee couldn't beat terrible Jefferson. That is the dumbest line of thinking going on the board right now. The other is that we will keep getting worse just because Miles is here. People aren't even rational in the discussion of these matters anymore.

Yeah, and you could struggle around for a few years and collect a couple hundred thousand every year for 4 years. That money will be gone inside of 5 years because most will spend like crazy.

Now if you are a guy that can't really improve your draft stock much, then I agree go, but Hunter, Hawkins, Vadal, and Dural, could seriously improve theirs by coming back.

For example Zach Martin was drafted 16th overall for guard last year for 8.96 mill contract and 4.84 mill signing bonus. Xavier Su'a Filo was drafted first in 2nd round with 5.55 mill contract and 2.35 signing bonus. Once you get past middle of the second round, your signing bonus goes under 1 mill (that is immediate money that cut you a check for). Once you go past early third, your contract money dips under 3 mill. Fourth round, your bonus is under 5k, fifth round, you are looking at 2.5 contract and around a 200k signing bonus.

Not only that, owners will feel easy cutting 5th rounders who didn't make an impact early because they didn't pay much, and Houston cut Montgomery (a third rounder) after a few months.

My thing is, you don't know how you'll perform in the NFL, and you could wash out after the first contract and hustle trying to get on practice squads and such. If you are on that level where you could improve and make incredible money upfront, why not come back for another year?

Both Vadal and Hawkins could be first round picks next year. If Hunter can show pass rushing skills, his frame, speed, and run stopping ability will look all that more impressive. Dural can improve on route running and bulk up a bit. With Harris, he could have a huge year next year and show the NFL two years of tape instead of one when he was just catching bombs. Right now, he is still too inconsistent to be anything higher than 5th round.

P.S. yes if they really need the money, by all means go, but some guys are losing the chance of making much more guaranteed and signing bonus money upfront IMO.

That is the key you are dead right on that. If you come back, especially the players and talent at LSU, the chances of you improving your draft stock therefore improving what you will get paid rises dramatically. Unfortunately the agents that are in these kids ears don't tell them that.

people that use your flawed logic of money now is the most important thing is the reason why so many players enter the draft early and dont get drafted at all. i guarantee people told anthony johnson all of the things you have argued as reasons to leave and in the end he was an undrafted free agent just trying to make a practice squad.

if money is so important, why would these young men settle for a dime today when they can have a dollar tomoro? also why would they not want to finish up their degree in case something happens and football ceases to be a possibility for them?

its people that steer these kids to think like you that won't be there for them in 5 years when they are back to the struggle of real life.

The league minimum isn't 500k. Unless you are drafted high you aren't getting that high signing bonus. After taxes, which you pay taxes in every state you play in, and agent fees, These guys aren't netting much and players go broke quick. Most guys don't make it out of that second contract. Ideal would be to get drafted higher and get that guaranteed money.

Why wouldn't Harris have a legitimate chance at unseating Jennings? If Harris gives LSU the best chance to win, he'll play. It's that simple.

These guys came together after the auburn game and turn things around.you guys think that might sway their decision for coming back and finishing?

Are we allowed to start a fund to provide insurance against injuries to players that come back for their senior season?

All Les mikes did was prevent Hartis from being hurt this year! These guys have to know how to pick up blitzing, if not they will be blown up, sacked regularly, back will run the wrong way, and he will throw INTs all day long. Geez some of you people just don't get it.

I don't blame anybody for declaring early for the draft. Just because they leave early doesn't mean they don't have as much as for LSU as a 5th year senior. They can come back and get their degree anytime, while they are one play away from a career ending injury. If they need the money, I have no problem with it.

Have another downvote to go with your second smegma shake, and refine the art of posting less than you already do.

Nega's don't bother me. Everyone has the right to bitch, and foolishly believe that all the answers rest inside of the u haul filled with les miles, et al, belongings headed up 61 out of BR. I am, however, a little bothered by crappy post that reply to an OP that's nothing more or less than a plea to our more senior players to give us another year, especially when that OP doesn't claim that those more senior players owe that to us - a fan base that doesn't stay for games, and has self denigration down to a science.
