Steve Van Buren
quote:
January 1, 1944: LSU's Steve Van Buren (#17) races towards the goal line during the Tigers' 19-14 victory over Texas A&M in the 1944 Orange Bowl. Van Buren was literally a one-man wrecking crew. The single-wing tailback ran, blocked, passed, punted, kicked off, kicked extra points, played defense and called plays that ranks as the most versatile performance in Orange Bowl history. Van Buren gained 172 yards, scored 2 touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass. lt was the first bowl game broadcast worldwide on the Armed Forces Network during World War II.
Van Buren would go on to a hall of fame career with the Philadelphia Eagles. A first round pick by the Eagles in 1944, he went on to become the most dominant runner of his era. He led the NFL in rushing and touchdowns scored 4 times in 1945, 1947, 1948 and 1949. Van Buren led the Eagles to back-to-back NFL titles in 1948 and 1949. He finished his 8-year career in 1952 as the NFL's all time leading rusher with 5,860 yards and 74 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

Obviously this is not on the same level as an NFL HOF like Van Buren but Demetrius Byrd does not get talked about enough when we discuss receivers on here. I was rewatching some Miles era game highlights last night and Demetrius came in clutch so many times. It’s so sad that his career was taken from him in that accident because he was supposed to go in the second or third round.

Speaking of other really good LSU players, I really wish I had been alive to see Bert Jones, Billy Cannon, Bob Pettit and PETE MARAVICH. Those friggin guys.
I’ve watched so many Pistol highlights. God he was so fricking good
