but what do you think would be the reaction of fans if you can’t win your season opener for 3 straight seasons?
reasonable folks shouldn’t pay attention to our fan base. We are a touch reactionary

Lincoln Riley is being told the same thing by his fanbase. Lose this game and the whole season is down the toilet so you better win it. I do think our offensive line will be the difference. USC’s is not that great so their d line won’t have experience against one like LSU’s.

I agree with you. If we start the year off with another loss, to a team we should beat, then this will say a lot about our head coach. I never try to pin one game on one person like this, but after the last few years, I do believe this is a must win for us, and I expect us to get it done, perhaps in dominating fashion. If we do not, it will be a long year, and the beginning of the end for him.

Our programs mirror each other in many ways EXCEPT we have won games the past 2 years and they fell off a cliff last year. Hopefully the BK culture wins out.

So three straight opening season losses for an esteemed coach like Kelly would not be a bad look for him as a head coach?

bad look? Sure. But a loss is wholly inconsequential as to his job security. It's not even a "must win" in terms of LSU's playoff prospects (though a win would definitely help)

"Must win" implies there are significant consequences if you lose. Those aren't present in this game.

LSU is going to play methodical football. They are going to run heavy on USC and run a short passing game to chew up clock. Nuss will take some shots, but they are going to be pound the rock.

USC's strength is not the DL, our OL is the best in the country, and from all the media, what they aren't allowing them to show on video is that Kaleb Jackson is destroying it in practice in 11 on 11.

I hope. I say this as BK guy, but the team has not really looked ready the last 2 season openers.

Our Front 7 on defense will determine this game. If they can get a pass rush and control the line of scrimmage then we will be fine.

I expect a 9-3 or 8-4 season record and would not be surprised if LSU doesn’t win vs USC.

NOT.AT.ALL Kelly's job at LSU is not on the line in any way, shape, or form. A loss to USC isn't going to change that. It's not a "must win" for him because there are little to no personal consequences if he loses. Kelly has generally taken the approach of limiting the physicality in camp leading up to the season. Certainly, it makes sense to do so because you absolutely want to avoid injuries to key players if at all possible. But you do have to ask if that approach hurts LSU in openers because they are not fully prepared to jump into the physicality of a game against an opponent with power conf. level talent. Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to recall FSU making it a point of emphasis to go full-pads and increase the physicality of their practices ahead of the LSU games relative to what they may have done playing a smaller conf. opening game. FSU looked like the more physical team in both of the games vs. LSU. IMO, Kelly needs to find a way to thread the needle of getting his team more prepared for the physicality that is going to come in an opener vs. a good opponent while also trying to avoid injuries.

I hate this entire post

I mean this in jest. Sort of.

You are wrong. BK won't get fired if he loses this game, and subsequently go on to an 8-4 type season. But, he will lose a lot of faith from this fanbase, at the very least, if he shows up with an unprepared team again to open the season. If we show up prepared, we should win this game, possibly with ease...if we lay another egg to open the season, the pressure will start to mount for BK and headed into 2025 there will be a lot of grumblings about some seats getting warm. I think we win this game comfortably.

Didn't the USC QB that started the bowl game had a huge passing game??

It really is a ‘must win’ this year. We drop that one and it will be very difficult to overcome.

Would not be a good look at all to lose three straight season opening games.

If BK loses to USC then goes out and has a few more embarrassing losses he’s in big trouble.
