P. Carroll: With all the 5***** recruits, geographical advantage and plays in a weak conference, Curley Hallman could have the same record.

If that were true, then USC would have done better prior the Carroll era...or do you not consider recruiting as part of being a coach?

As much as I dislike USC and resent some of his comments directed toward the bayou, the guy can coach and to say otherwise is denial, wishful thinking or ignorance. Curly Hallman only got the LSU job because he had a QB who carried a team for several years and made him look better than he was. He was a mistake from day one.

Pete Carrol
Jim Tressel
Les Miles
Mack Brown
Urban Meyer

I don't think Saban is top 5. He may be 6 or 7 or 8.

they might not be the best gameday coaches, but they are certainly great program builders. They both took over programs that weren't doing dick, and brought them back to national powers. And Mack Brown had North Carolina ranked in the top 5 at one point. The man can coach. Tuberville/Miles/Meyers would all be about 6th on my list. Their resumes just aren't quite long enough yet.

Brown brought Texas their first national championship in 35 years(in 2005) and Stoops brought OU their first national title in 15 years(in 2000) and has a good shot at it this year. Plus, OU has several conference titles under Stoops as well.

Is there a coach out there our fans don't think is overrated?

As far as Tuberville, in my book, I think his resume is long enough(I'm not saying he is a top 5 coach though). He did okay at Ole Miss under sanctions and has brought stability to their program at Auburn. Auburn will just most likely never get the athletes across the board like Texas, LSU, UGA, UF,etc. regardless of who coaches there.

Here's a comparison of a few of the top coaches:

Pete Carrol (76-14 in 7 years, 6 straight BCS, 1 NC)

Urban Meyer (31-8 in 3 years, 1 NC)

Les Miles (34-6 in 3 years with 1 NC)

Tommy Tubberville (80-33 in 10 years, screwed out of a NC spot in 04)

Jim Tressel (73-16 in 7 years, 1 NC)

from pure records, Tubberville is the best coach. Pete Carroll has been in 6 straight BCS bowls, amazing even in the PAC 10. Tressel has a very respectable record of 73-16. Miles has lost 6 games in 3 years, better than any of the first 3 year records of any of the above coaches. Meyer has changed the world with the spread option, and should win another NC this year. so my rankings are this:

1. Pete Carroll USC
2. Les Miles, LSU
3. Tommy Tubberville, Auburn
4. Urban Meyer, Florida
5. Jim Tressel, Ohio St

But what you just posted displayed that Carroll has the best record at his current school - average of 2 losses per season, whereas Tuberville has averaged just over 3.

Here are my thoughts on the typical candidates listed:

Mack Brown - has done a wonderful job of getting his program to the doorstep throughout his career, only once did he break through, and that was when he had a transcendant talent - Vince Young - leading his team.
Tressel - has exceeded expectations from his first season, when he beat Michigan, until January of 2007.
Rodriguez - His claim to fame is sneaking up on Georgia in the relocated Sugar Bowl.
Miles/Meyer - Have been outstanding in three seasons, with a top-ten team in season four.
Tuberville - always has a solid team, only once has he had a conference championship.
Carroll - has dominated all comers since his first season there. Remember, they lost 6 games that year, and have lost 8 in the next five years.
Stoops - his teams are always a factor in the conference and national championship races, unlike Texas.

With that, here are my top five:

Miles
Meyer
Carroll
Tressel
Stoops

I think to say top coach you have to put a team on equal footing, which is in itself impossible to do. If you could make 20 clones of the 2007 LSU team, which coach would do the most with it? Just because a coach wins a NCG doesn't mean he's the best coach, it also means he could have the best athletes.

I have absolutely no idea who the best coach is, but I know of a few who do more with less.

RR totally built his program in WVU.
Grobe?? at Wake Forest does an excellent job with the lack of talent he has coming in
I thought that Nutt did an amazing job with the lack of a quality QB any year at Arky.
I think that Mike Stoops (I think it's Mike) has actually done pretty well at Arizona with the crap talent they get.

I know that list doesn't include any of the top guys, but those top guys are also at schools that pull in blue chippers. Would Tressel, Brown, Carroll, Miles or any of the others win more games than Grobe does at Wake Forest? I don't think so personally

Rating college football coaches is tough to agree upon because most people disagree on the importance of the criteria used to evaluate the coaches. Some put more emphasis on game day decision making than others.

I give Tressel top marks as a program manager in that he recruits well, hires good assistants and represents Ohio State in a positive fashion with the fans and the media. However, I'm not sold on Tressel as a game planner and game manager from the big games I've seen Ohio State play against teams with good game planners and managers. And I'm not sold that he utilizes all of the talent available to Ohio State as effectively as possible.

He is clearley the best coach in the Big Ten, and by a large margin. I expect to see Ohio State continue to dominate the Big Ten with the annual game against Michigan likely to determine the Big Ten champion in most seasons. It will be interesting to see how Rich Rodriguez fares at Michigan. I do not have much regard for him as a program manager. Will he be able to last at Michigan long enough to display his abilities as a game planner and game manager?

I'm not a fan of Rodriguez, but you list Carrol who blew a chance against a terrible UCLA team and Stoops who blew a chance against Texas Tech and got blown out by K. State in his last game before the BCS Title game. At least when Rodriguez lost to Pitt, his star quarterback was hurt. And for losing against big underdogs, Carrol and Stoops take the cake for their losses against Stanford and Texas Christian.

he exceeded expectations in 2002 and 2004 i believe (by beating a better UM team).

2005-2007 were underwhelming. 2005 OSU may have been the 2nd best team in america and they didn't win the big10

Rodriguez - His claim to fame is sneaking up on Georgia in the relocated Sugar Bowl.

and building west virginia into a great program. he also is the architect of the spread option

auburn has bad luck and his teams don't have the talent of many of his SEC counterparts

this is just incorrect. texas is always a factor in the big12 conference race, and if they beat OU, they'll be a factor in the national title race

1) Carroll
2) Spurrier
3) Tressell (you have to come up bigger in big games and beating Lloyd Carr just isn't that big of a deal)
4) Meyer
5) Tubberville

Meyer has reached the pinnacle at two schools and one of them was Utah.

Miles is in the top ten. But he's only had three years of excellent performances. He's done an amazing job in those three years and should be given all the credit in the world.

I don't think Saban is in the top five. Sure, if he gets Bama back on track her will be. But so far, he's been in a 3-year funk away from the talent in Baton Rouge.

I think Rich Rodriguez will absolutely dominate the Big Ten with his offense, and will not Tubberville out shortly.
