Most people simply trusted Skip. He got brought in a year early and knew how Skip did it. What got Smoke was his arrogance. He thought he could get any kid he wanted and then hardly do a thing except make a lineup.

I don't think it was bad but it certainly wasn't great. Maybe safer since it was trying to extend Skip's presence? I don't know. Probably a good example why you should always swing for the fences even if it turns into a dud on a hire.

Also, good example why players and ex coaches shouldn't have the influence they do over hires.

I never got the hire. Skip didn’t even try to sell it to the natives either. He said here.. Skip did push Turtle Thomas as the package deal. Smoke knew baseball and was even a good scout for talent. He just didn’t like to recruit.

He was Skip’s guy so people were going to give him a chance but nobody was excited at all about it. Like I said, meh.

He was hired by Bertman in 2000 to come and sit in for a year as part of the deal. I forget who all he officially interviewed but there was definitely a big photo op when he met with Cador. He probably knew it was going to be Smoke all along.

And that doesn’t even get into the infamous camp money theory.

No. Smoke love drinking cold ones in the old section at Sammy’s on Highland with Knucklehead and all of Buddy S’s baws. Skip turned down Corbin and said he was too business like. “Smoke was a salesmen. “-Skip Bertman.

Theory hahahaha

Smoke quickly flipped the I don’t give a shite switch. The players would be Walk Ons before the grounds was finished dragging the field after games.
