Y'all probably think I've gone bonkers, but it's already happened...on 2 October 1971 (my 18th birthday!), prior to the Rice football game (Homecoming that year). It was played while fans were filing in for the football game, and I remember it being lots of fun.

Now the LSU rugby team has had lots of success in recent years. Can you envision a return to the pre-football rugby contests in Tiger Stadium?

Isn’t the Rugby team pretty much an unrecognized club sport now? I’m pretty sure those poor bastards have to pay for their own unis, equipment and travel.

Thank Title IX... but look on the bright side. Pack The PMAC for women’s basketball this year will be a real hoot.

Great idea to tear up the field before a football game

I don't know when rugby season actually is but if they did it in the spring before baseball games in tiger stadium I would definitely show up drunk and show my ignorance

Was it ever not just a club sport? I highly doubt it

When/if paranoid moms or CTE kills football, it’ll be up to rugby to save us from boring, non contact sports anyway. Tech has let its rugby team play in Joe Aillet stadium (although it’s turf, so no real worry on tearing it up), and it’s awesome.

Also, Tech rugby has had a lot of success. Would be great if they and LSU got in the same conference (not sec/C-USA, it’s different stuff for rugby) and played each other.

I was part of a plan like this for halftime of a Dallas Cowboys Game in 2000. We got pushed back to right after the game because of some baby crawling races gone too long.
But it was still a fun experience.

This is would be a great exhibition of the sport from which Football is derived. But could tear up a grass field. Conditions would have to be optimal.

In my LSU rugby days 94-98 we were allowed to play a few matches on the Parade Ground on Game day. This always got us a few hundred more fans than the usual fans of parents/friends/2nd stringers.

Here we were.

I see my old coach, Dave Jenkins, of The Woodlands, in that pic.

Yea. The exhibition was basically 15 min match between the Dallas Harlequins and the Texas Rugby Union Mens All-Star team(red jerseys).
Jenkins was one of the TRU(and Westerns) All Star Mens coaches at the time.
Was cold and wet as shite that day. We had fun with it Though. And I'm pretty sure only one try was scored between the laughs, half-speed tackles, and shite-talkin.

I propose a 7's(a normal rugby natch is 15 vs 15) exhibition between:

LSU(a top-tier Collegiate Team)
vs
New Orleans(a top-tier Mens team with several LSU alumni)

This would make more sense for several reasons:

*easy to have 14 total players run on the field and play 7 minute exhibition vs 30 players.
*fast-paced and several scores in the 7 minutes
*good recruiting for BOTH teams as LSU students and New Orleans residents in attendance may want to take up rugby
*far less damaging to the turf.

FWIW You probably saw a 7's rugby match in the Rio Olympics. The US Women are damned good. The US men aren't that bad either.

I think it would be cool, but I doubt the football staff would be down with another team potentially tearing up the field prior to a game.

I’d rather watch LSU Hockey at the Raisin Canes River Center

I don't have a single issue with playing rugby in Tiger Stadium.

Make it happen. Just not prior to a football game.

In early 80's the LSU club regularly played on the Parade Ground. I was with the Baton Rouge club back then and had my best game against LSU on the PG. Took an elbow to my right temple and all of a sudden everything seemed like it was slow motion! I scored 3 times! At halftime, my captain took me out of the game when I asked him who we were playing and what city we were in. Did not keep me from a good party with the LSU squad after the game, though!

Would love to see a Rugby game on the PG on football game days!

yeah, was still at Sam Houston when this took place, but see several future teammates in that picture.

Mike, agree on it would have to be 7's. still not sure how good of a match LSU vs. NOLA would be, ha.
