Thats has been an lsu problem since Stingley left..somewhat decent man coverage but never play the ball. So hope to knock it loose after the catch is made vs preventing the catch.
They can't run, watch the Wrs eyes and then turn last minute.

we're not going anywhere on a big stage with Stamps and Gilbert etc

we need to hope to get an impact S from the portal to hopefully pair with Delane, and hope Jakheem and Pickett can be an upgrade at CB

That secondary needs a clean sweep in personnel for 2025

In most situations turning your head around will get you burnt. Letting a receiver manipulate you with their eyes is a recipe for disaster.

Of course all of this depends on coverage, leverage, technique. But most people on here just see a guy running next to a receiver and scream “TURN AROUND” with absolutely no clue.

Why was this a trash post? Don't recall any of his other posts, but this one is spot on. Our dbs need to do better at looking for the ball!

Because it is probably the better way to play the position. Rantards everywhere will disagree.

When Saban was here, he was by the standards of today VERY candid in Gridiron Club gatherings.

He said he used to tell his DB's if you were in man coverage and looking back at the QB you'd usually be looking back at the ball going over your head.

There were so many plays this year where Stamps was in perfect position but wouldn’t look for the ball. He’s going to be a good one if he figures out how to use his eyes

They have terrible ball awareness on the field. Only the great DBS have it on a consistent basis. It also comes with coaching and determination in the player to get good at it. All I see is I hope I don’t get burned arse cornerback play and I’m tired of it. Zy Alexander looks like the only one that improved in that area.

Yep, we actually saw that happen in the Baylor game at least once.

I rewatched the entire game this morning, and for every incomplete pass by Baylor, only two, I repeat two incompletions were due to our DBs actually defending the receivers properly. All other incompletions were due to bad passes or dropped passes.

This is especially true on endzone corner routes. If the receiver is going to catch the ball, it will be in the next millisecond or he will be out of bounds. TURN AND LOOK FOR THE DAMN BALL!! I can't count the times a pass could have been intercepted if the defender had just turned and looked.

Whoever down voted this, please explain why.

Stamps improve a lot from year 1 to 2. He seems smart and is known to work very hard. Those traits lead to consistent improvement.

A better version of Stamps, will likely be our 4th or 5th best cover guy. Juxtapose that against this season where he was either our best or second best cover guy.

While we were awful this game and basically this season, it was improved from last year, and clearly will take a big step next year.

1a - Jackson
1b - Delane
1c - Pickett
4 - Stamps
5a - Anding
5b - Woodland

Best combo of talent/experience CB room than we’ve seen since 2019.

Safety, that’s another story but in Toviano and Spears, we have some talent. We do really need 1 stud out of the portal.

Yes, I have a guy who sits behind me at the home games who yells that every game all the time. Maybe we can have someone post a chalk talk with a DB coach discussing this and explaining the proper technique.

Because you are correct, turning around in straight man coverage is not always the prevalent teaching and as you say it absolutely depends on coverage, leverage, technique, situation, etc.

I’m not sure how you could watch that game and not see Woodland passing up Stamps. He actually did play physical (sometimes too physical) with WRs and make plays on the ball. He’s an ideal Nickel or Dime in passing situations.

Stamps has improved, but he still looks lost at times. The ole defense on the pass to the 2 yard line, which was an awful, underthrown pass that should have been knocked away or picked if Stamps hadn’t been completely unaware of what was happening, was telling.

I hope Stamps continues to improve and develop, but I see more development in Woodland as a coverage DB than Stamps with a ton of playing time over two.

The really good DB's have the innate instinct and timing to turn their heads and make plays. I will disagree with you on Woodland, at least in the bowl game, he played well and had a couple of pass breakups.

Agree. Woodland feels closer to being ready than Stamps.

Exactly, when you’re behind a running for your life to catch up you can’t turn your head. Speed is lacking.
