I get not like Lane, but how would he “be horrible here”?

The last time LSU had a handshake deal it was with Tom Herman, who then proceeded to break the deal and go to Texas. That information comes straight from the mouth of someone who was in the room. We ended up with Coach O, and the history book has been written on that hire -- the good, the bad, and the ugly.
I don't want Kiffin but even if I did this is a very tough season to get him away from Ole Miss. That goes for us and UF.
I see this hire ending up like the Les Miles hire -- not the sexy hire everyone was hoping for. Unless Nick Saban leaves his wife and life in Tuscaloosa to shock the world and come here again, prepare to be underwhelmed. Woodward and Kelly really screwed us.
For the record I want us to hire Joe Brady but admit it is unlikely for similar reasons as to Kiffin: he's already got a good job on a good team that will be in the postseason.

The risk is that you wait for CFP-bound coach, pass in other candidates, then fail to lure the CFP-bound coach.

Say what you will about verge, but playing the long game is absolutely the correct move here.

It’s November 4th in a highly competitive marketplace. You don’t create negative leverage against yourself by stating certain options may be off the table.

Yeah, playing a waiting game for a CFP coach is dangerous. You better be damn sure we can get him, because otherwise you're left with Head Coach Frank Wilson. I especially wouldn't trust Kiffin on a handshake deal. The dude loves trolling and would leave us out to dry if he felt like it
