I think some folks in this thread didn’t actually read the linked article. The 4-year recruiting rankings are not intended to be a barometer of how each time has recruited over the past 4 years. It is intended to be part of the coming year’s S&P+ ranking. That’s why it is so heavily skewed towards the most recent recruiting class - S&P+ already includes a metric for “returning production”. The recruiting rankings are supposed to fill the gap between “returning” and “new” production.
So the ranking is not intended to tell you anything about rebuilds or historical recruiting strength. It is intended to determine which teams are best poised to replace their lost production in 2019, and I think LSU at #3 makes a lot of sense in that regard.

Your post insinuated that this calculation confirmed there was never a rebuild. If the formula dictates that only 3% of the calculation involved Les' last signing class, then your comment makes no sense. This rating system doesn't prove or disprove anything in regards to whether there was a rebuild when Orgeron was hired. Nothing was "confirmed" one way or the other
Damn. You rained on his parade fairly quickly. Funny stuff.

That Oklahoma and Ohio St schedule though. And Clemson for that matter.
The SEC West is a far bigger gauntlet than any of the other conferences, much less divisions.
That said, our goal should always be "beat Bama"

Why would the 2019 class count that high? Most of these guys won't play this year. 67% is ridiculous. It should be more like 10%.
And the whole process makes no sense. Look at the kids in the two deep, why look at kids who sit the bench or who have already left?

I can see why you think that and in hindsight I probably should have said “I no longer want to hear (but muh rebuild)”. I apologize for the confusion.
However, my post was specifically about the post definitely no longer being usable as an even remotely legitimate excuse. These are now almost completely Orgerons players.
If he can’t get it done by 2020, he isn’t the answer.

I mean You’d have to compare this years to when O took over the team in 2017.
I think We were probably pretty close.
Since 2014 we’ve had 1 class outside the top 7
2018.
Only 2 out of the top 5 have been 2017 and 2018.
So idk rebuild always was fricking dumb

I don't think even the biggest Orgeron supporters would disagree with that

The biggest problem with the guy who came up with this formula is that he doesn't count for players that are no longer with those programs. It's really hard to account for "overall talent" when you don't account for transfers, dismissals, ineligibility, etc. For instance, UGA got a 5 star yesterday that is going JUCO because he can't qualify, but he still counted in their ranking. Those 247 and Rivals rankings also don't account for players who transfer into your program or Juco guys. I have no idea what effect it would have on the overall numbers. I also think he gave far too much weight on this year's class. The majority of the guys signed this year won't be playing significant time next year for any team, so giving them 67% of the weight in the overall calculation is probably a little overzealous IMO

Certain areas of the team, particularly the offensive line were critically short of depth after several players walked when O took over. Anyone that doesn't think that LSU didn't have depth issues should look no further than the starting lineups for 2018. Most were sophomores. one senior and one junior.
Plus due to injury the lineup was changed almost weekly.

Seems to me it makes Dabo the best coach in the nation with a composite rank of 10 yet with the most wins, conf titles, and nat'l titles (tied with saban).

I'm pretty sure everyone is on board with this.

That’s true but Clemson had a lot of their juniors and seniors skip the draft especially on both lines! We should add that to that formula because it makes a big difference!

I agree, the formula is a bit flawed. But, my point was, we are now getting into the area of “no excuses”. Basically (and I may have expressed it in an unclear way) I’m saying everything going forward is pretty much 100% Orgerons success or 100% his failure. He’s been given enough time to “rebuild”. He has “his players and staff”. Aside from something crazy happening like Burrow getting a season ending injury, we should see vast improvements this year. That’s pretty much the only position that losing a player at would be a legitimate excuse for not seeing improvement. You can’t say “but we lost a linemen A”. If he was truly doing his job, he would have recruited well enough on the lines that losing one or two guys wouldn’t totally rank your season. No, the QB position is the ONLY position in football where losing that one player for the season is a legitimate excuse for your season to go poorly.

Lol. I said I liked last year's dlinemen haul. Until you had to move guys to the oline because Ed oline class wasn't that good.
So yeah.

Again, read the article..

There are three components to my S&P+ team projections: recent history, returning production, and recruiting.

Returning production tells you how much of last year’s team returns, and recruiting gives you an idea of what will replace departures.

But muh rebuild.
Its year 3 for Coach O. He's had a chance to recruit "his" players, coach "his" players, and they have a chance to now be on the field. Thats always been the way to approach it IMO.

So in 2017 when our last 4 classes were #7 #2 #5 #2 and we had a 5thbyear senior at QB it was a rebuild?
It was never a rebuild.
O is just getting the coaching back on track
We were a shite show in 2017.

True.
Makes me question the rankings themselves.
Take for instance the LSU and Bama QB's signed this year. In 24/7's rankings Taulia is ranked ahead of Parrish in the state of Alabama rankings. Always has been and still is.
Bama's Taulia made LSU's Parrish look like Drew Brees in the Alabama state championship game. Then followed it up by making Parrish look like Tom Brady in the Polynesian Bowl. Taulia stunk it up in those two games and is still ranked higher. And 24/7 had the digital media rights to the Polynesian Bowl, its not like they weren't aware of the game.
In comparison they dropped Kardell from a 5-star to a 4-star and their explanation for it was his performance in one all-star game. So it mattered for Kardell but Taulia in two games of total suckage retains his previous ranking.
