I do feel like he was the best tackling safety at lsu. I don’t feel like looking up missed tackle stats, but it seems like he rarely let someone slip away. He had that stockier build and was VERY good at wrapping up on impact.
Delpit may have been a little better at playing the ball in the air.

Eric Reid a little slow

Jamal adams best tackler in space, hands of stone dropped interceptions.

Grant Delpit playmaker extraordinaire, surpassed only by burns as a horrendous tackler

Winner
Brandon Taylor solid tackler, great coverage skills

Guys like Landry and Steltz were true run-stopping safeties. Delpit was at an entirely different level from them in ball skills. (That's what she said.) He was definitely more of the complete package.

Sophomore 2018 Delpit was unreal

Best defensive player in the country that year, been beating that drum since 2018.

He and Jamal were different types of safeties to me. Jamal much more of an in the box/ havoc weaker. Grant more of a centerfielder.

I’d have loved to see them play together, they had complementary games.

Delpit was great he won the Jim Thorpe award his last season- but the year before he was super great. Don’t get me wrong he was great the next year also but I believe the voters thought they owed him the award.

Also shout out to Mark Roman, who was a threat to lead the team in tackles and Ints. For a whole season.

I'd have Delpit #2 but the names are right. Casanova was great but too soon for me.

Honorable mention Liffort Hobley who is certainly on the all name team.

Best safety in the past 20 years, imo. Full package.

Casanova was considered a corner but really was more of a safety. He was 6’2” 200 lbs.
He was the only 3 time consensus all American and would have been 4 time had they let him play varsity his freshman year. He was beyond great. In the 6 NFL seasons he was a 3 time pro bowler (and it wasn’t like the pro bowl today. They actually played for real). He was an all pro one season.
I would say he was the best safety in lsu history. He was certainly as big or bigger than all of the ones you can list on here in terms of height. He was fast at acceleration almost like a middle and when he stretched out he continued to accelerate even as he was finishing his race in the 100 yard dash. I’m convinced he would have been about a 10.4100M guy watching him run. He ran a 9.7 100 yard dash.
I’m also convinced had he stayed in the NFL, he would be in the HoF.
If you don’t think he was as good as other athletes today, google how many are getting articles written about them today 50 years after they retired.

Yap. As far as coverage + tackling these were the two best

Adams in the box was probably the best. But covering & pass defense instincts not as good as the other 2.

Was amazing. Only thing he wasn't great at was interceptions/ball skills.

How is this an unpopular opinion? He was a great safety. Now IMO, I don’t know if one stands out clearly over the others. But if you tell me Adams was the best of the bunch I am not going to argue with you one bit.
