re: Unpopular Opinion: 2006 Florida > 2006 LSU

I think it is more that people lament the fact that we didn’t capitalize on all the talent we had on the 2006 team. I don’t think many people would say we were better than Florida—we were more talented than Florida but couldn’t put it all together. Important difference.

just so people remember, Hester got into the endzone late in the 2nd quarter, but was called short of the goalline. Next play Jamarcus fumbles the snap. we force a quick 3 and out and Jamarcus throws a stupid pass down the field for an interception on the first play. They drive down and score right before the end of the half to go up 14-7. So instead of us going up 14-7 going into half, UF does, b/c Jamarcus was an idiot.
Then to make things worst, we get the 2nd half kickoff, and fumble it into the endzone for a safety. Now it's 16-7 and momentum is no where near our side. UF gets the safety kick and scores in no time. Now it's 23-7.
with 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, we had a chance to go up 14-7, TWICE. Instead, we imploded and went down 23-7 over the next 8 minutes of game play. 23 point difference in 8 minutes. And the game was lost.
Could we have beaten them if we had gotten a rematch.....maybe. People seem to forget that while Jamarcus was a great QB, he was an idiot. He was consistently bailed out in college b/c of his talent, but when we played legit teams like Auburn and UF, his lack of QB awareness and decision making was evident. We scored 3 points against Auburn, and 10 points against UF, with one of the most talented offenses we had ever seen.
People also need to remember that in 2006 we played 4 top ten teams, ON THE ROAD, and went 2-2, and was cheated in one of them.

I agree with you to an extend, both teams were loaded and good enough to win the title, talent wise the teams were pretty even (as was USC). A lot of LSU fans thought 2006 was LSU's most talented team (and maybe it was) but it was a brutal schedule all 4 road SEC games were vs top 10 teams, the 2 loses finished in the top 10 but the big difference is...

UF had Urban Meyer and we had Les Miles.
Sadly most people think this means Les sucks or it was all because if him we didn't win and if only we hired someone else...., but UM is one of the greatest coaches of all time, he had a loaded team and was at home. 2006 was still a great team and season, we finished #3, one of i think 9 or 10 top 5 finishes in school history.

I believe you are the idiot here.

No different than saying uga was playing as well as LSU at end of 07
Wasn’t uga ahead of LSU and beating tenn in sec title game and having that big win over va tech ended up being the difference

You win the head-to-head, have a better record,
LSU in 2011 won the head-to-head and had the Better record than Bama. If LSU gets a mulligan like Bama did, then I would venture to say LSU beats Florida.

There’s no way to know that. Florida was playing better than anyone else at the end of the year. They destroyed an Ohio State team that many people thought was elite.
They also shut down Darren McFadden when they played Arkansas in the SEC championship. That’s something LSU was completely unable to do the week before. McFadden tore us a new one, even though we were able to pull off a win.

So you guys think one of the biggest NFL QB busts ever wasn't an idiot? He had no work ethic, and his talent couldn't overcompensate for his mind at the NFL level like it did in college most of the time.
I loved Jamarcus, still wish him the best, but he was not a smart qb by any means. We won games b/c he did things that no one else could, like flicking a ball 50+ yards downfield across his body to Doucet against ASU. I would gladly take the good he gave us with the bad.

Florida went 13-1, while LSU went 11-2. This included a 23-10 victory over LSU. Also, UF completely humiliated and embarrassed undefeated, #1 Ohio State. Both LSU and UF were incredibly talented and stocked with future NFL players, but UF had Urban Meyer and we had Les Miles. There’s no logical reason to believe LSU was better unless you’re wearing purple and gold glasses.
Les Miles had a winning record against Urban Meyer.

If LSU doesn’t lose vs auburn and gets a rematch against Florida in the SECCG, I believe they win and destroy Ohio state just the same.

I’m speaking to all the morons on here who insist 2006 LSU was the best team in college football that year, despite much evidence to the contrary
No one is arguing that Florida shouldn’t have won the title.
But I do think that LSU team got much, much better as the year went on and they were as good as team in the country by seasons end.
And no k e argues that Florida wasn’t The best team all year. LSUs early losses hurt. But teams improve and it’s not crazy to think LSU would have beaten Florida had they played later in the year.

But please go on about how much of an idiot Jamarcus was and use 2 games as examples. fricking dummy

The difference was in coaching, man, when will y'all finally realize that. Miles held LSU back, shite, you think Meyers and Fla beats LSU with the type of offense they have now back in 2006. I don't think so. And if they do beat LSU it's a really close game.

This part is true.
Put Les Miles in charge of the 2019 LSU team and they lose three games: Bama, Florida, and Texas. No doubt.
