The Auburn game too, Auburn was the 2019 team's toughest game.

Game was closer than the score. We had a drive where we fumbled on the Florida 1.

Les was 3-3 against Meyer. Don’t act like Meyer the series was lopsided in the slightest.

Unpopular Opinion: 2006 Florida > 2006 LSU

This is an interesting argument to have: head to head that team defeated LSU, however that Florida team struggled to win games during the season and the SEC title game against a team LSU defeated handily IN ARKANSAS yet ultimately destroyed an OSU team tons of people were claiming were among the greatest single-season teams of all-time with that dominance. On LSU's side, other than a questionably officiated game in Auburn that they got screwed out of, LSU dominated this season and I still believe this is the best LSU team of all-time, their final game against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl just solidifies that. Florida was more resourceful that season, LSU more dominant yet complacent, that Florida team's more like the 83 NC State basketball team, I can't honestly say LSU's better, that's the beauty of college football.

That's the indicator of winners and champions, you don't choke in crunch time we did that season and it cost us BIG TIME bc we WERE the most talented team in ball that season

This screams morale victory

I don’t think it’s irrational to believe LSU could have beaten FLA in the SECCG or in the semifinals if the CFP existed in 2006.

FLA and AUB got us early when the team hadn’t gel’d yet.

Well, both were very good teams but it wasn't exactly like Florida whipped our arse in the Swamp.

I could break down that game several ways, but the first thing I remember is they called a phantom hold on the play that called back a TD for us and we end up fumbling on the 1. I'm not a blame the ref guy and we had a chance to overcome which is what champions do and we did not, we fumbled on the 1.

There was also a Florida punt where our guy was in the backfield and in as good a position for the block as I've ever seen and to this day I still can't see how he missed it.

That was almost 14 years ago so I can't recall all the things that bugged me back then but I can tell you with certainty that I did not after that game conclude Florida clearly the better team, and certainly not at the end of the year...and I do consider myself pretty objective in that regard. I've come out of some LSU victories over the years where I thought we got whupped pretty good and were fortunate to win.

I can remember wanting to play them again in the SEC title game, I think we would have shown up for that one...but we'll never know will we...that frickin game plan at Auburn still grates at me.

What are some examples of LSU winning a game in which they got “whupped?”

Yes but every time LSU completed a downfield pass the refs negated it.

UGA 2003
First downs UGA 23 LSU 16
TOtal Yards UGA 411 LSU 285
Turnovers UGA 3 LSU 2
Penalties UGA7-48 LSU 9-63

We lost in almost every statistical category, as that moron on ESPN blabbered about when he said Georgia was the better team and would win the SECCG, but we still won.

Refs stole the Auburn game for sure.

We killed ourself vs Florida.

Exactly. And it still took 5 LSU TOs for Florida to beat LSU at home. Florida slogged through it’s schedule all year. Never looked like a great team until Ohio St, a game that everyone thought OSU would dominate. LSU most definitely could have beat Florida in a rematch, but who knows. I think USC was good that year too but had those two weird losses.

The rigged Auburn game is what hurts most. LSU earned that win.

Truly horrible call in a season of epic bad officiating. Yes LSU should’ve overcome this but damn, it hurts to remove a TD like that. LSU has driven right down the field to score.

Was a weird sloppy game.

I'm an old timer but LSU vs. Bama '84 comes to mind among others - but just saying if LSU got their tail whipped I would not hold back from saying it...and they did not in Gainesville in 2006 and I don't think it's being a homer to say I think we'd have won the rematch.

Talent wise, very much on the same level...as was Auburn.

Could we have beaten them if we had gotten a rematch.....maybe. People seem to forget that while Jamarcus was a great QB, he was an idiot. He was consistently bailed out in college b/c of his talent, but when we played legit teams like Auburn and UF, his lack of QB awareness and decision making was evident. We scored 3 points against Auburn, and 10 points against UF, with one of the most talented offenses we had ever seen.

We ran for 2.7 yards a carry in those two games. That's why we lost.

Florida was playing better than anyone else at the end of the year.

Not really. Florida slogged through the whole season with a bunch of close wins. NOBODY predicted the OSU blowout.
quote:

They also shut down Darren McFadden when they played Arkansas in the SEC championship. That’s something LSU was completely unable to do the week before. McFadden tore us a new one, even though we were able to pull off a win.

Florida handled McFadden better than LSU did but didn’t dominate either. Was a close game until the end.
